Just kidding, do not recommend this book to a teenager.
When I was in high school I knew very little English. I remember being assigned Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, which is very short and well-written. It’s also a good history lesson about the rescue of Danish Jews. The classics mentioned in this thread (1984? Seriously?) are way too hard.
