Applying for a Visa 'on the spot' in Taiwan

Hi everybody,

i plan to visit Taiwan (Taipei probably) in early February 2014.

Im a German citizen and as far as i am informed it is possible for
me to stay in Taiwan for 90 Days without Visa.

First this worked perfectly for me, because i will be in China before and
i wanted to spend 1 Month in Tapei before heading back to China by
applying for a Students-Visa for Chengdu.

But now it came to my mind, that i might enjoy Taipei (or Taiwan in general)
that much, that i would like to stay longer - so in this case i would like to
take part in a Mandarin-Learning Program of one of the Unversitys there.

Can anyone tell me, if it is possible to apply for a Students-Visa on the spot in Taiwan,
lets say after i allready spent 1 Month there? Or do have to leave the country and
come back again?

Besides that i would like to hear you thoughts on a good University for Learning
Mandarin (thought about the Chinese Culture University so far) but there
is probably a thead for this allready so i’ll keep my eyes open!

Thanks for your time and please excuse my bad english…

edit:\ Another idea just came to my mind - maybe you
guys can tell me whether i’m right or wrong here:

If i can stay in Taiwan for 90 Days without Visa, couldn’t i just
leave Taiwan after 90 Days and head for HongKong/The Philippines / etc. for a few days and then come
back for another 90 Days… therefore i wouldn’t need to apply for a Visa at all to stay for 6 Month right!?

That works fine: I did it for a while, back in the days when you could only get 30 or 60 days.

Good luck with your studying.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get an answer right away - their office organisaiton is, ahem, not very efficient… but if you follow up (phoning helps  ) you’ll sooner or later get the information…

Perfect - wish more posters with questions would do that…

I spoke with a local TECO office nearby me (overseas) who said that you are taking your chances with the visa free entry to convert it to a student or work visa, since the express reason for this is only visiting, and so it would be up to the discretion of the local Taiwan office if they will convert it.
