I’m getting ready to apply after being on a marriage based ARC for over 20 years. They said they have to ask Taipei if I need an FBI level check or if my original State criminal check from 20 years ago will cover it.
I left Taiwan one time in 20+ years and for about 5 days.
Anyone have info or experience?
IN THEORY, if a home country police certificate was provided at least once during any previous ARC applications and the applicant never been outside of TW for more than 3 months at a time, you should NOT need a new home country police certificate. Even more so if the ARC was for JFRV.
In general I know for US citizen the FBI one is good, never heard anyone using their own state certificate. But again, this is all theoretical as different NIA officers will have their own opinion…
Back when I got mine it could be from the State. A few people were beginning to get FBI ones.
I guess it’ll just be luck of the draw for me and some officers opinion if I need to now follow the new FBI document rule even though I clearly haven’t been there since I received my ARC. Immigration can see only 1 exit in 20+ years and my passport documents that as a 5 day stay in Okinawa.
Perhaps for some reason they don’t trust each States CCR though. I’ll find out soon enough.

Just an update on my situation above.
I was told by 2 officers that I will need the FBI check to apply for the APRC …even though I’ve only left once in 20 years for a few days.
Also due to letting my ARC lapse 1 week I was told I’d have to pay a 10,000 fine. I was able to cut that in half with a waiver for having a child under 18.
I was then told that because of the lapse I now only have 2 years to apply for APRC or the clock resets. Don’t understand the logic but that’s what I was told. At least it didn’t break my required consecutive years. Furthermore one of the officers personally telephoned my wife and told her I’d better do it ASAP as rules change each year and it may not get easier.
Good, at least after 5 years I’ll still have a chance. I have a criminal record now.
well, might make sense as you didn’t submitted a home country police certificate, but a state certificate which is not on a federal level.
generally speaking, once you become eligible for APRC, you have a 2 yrs window to apply, passed those the clock resets indeed. Why? no clue, it’s stupid, but it is what it is. A friend of mine had this same issue.
tbh, as soon as you get eligible, just bit the bullet and pay the money and get peace of mind. ARC is so flimsy and you are at the whim of the employer/spouse, will never ever understand people who are eligible who don’t apply. Like asking for trouble to be coming

As for eligibility window I have no idea. I’ve been on this marriage ARC around 20 years but they never said I passed up my eligibility.

The reason I didn’t do it before is because I didn’t meet the financial requirements…but last year they stopped that requirement for marriage ARC. I intended to do it last year but that’s my screw up. Live and learn.
