We are about to move to Taiwan to pursue a masters degree. Will my wife and kid (toddler) receive an ARC as well? Is the wife of a foreign student allowed to work in Taiwan? I will be entitled to NHI after 4 months, does it cover my wife and kid?
Thanks in advance

1) Should do
2) Definitely not (they’ll both be listed as your dependants)
3) Yes. Getting NHI is related to your ARC, and has nothing to do with the reasons why you have an ARC. It goes off the date on your ARC, too.
You’ll be paying for your NHI with your school fees, your wife and child will most likely have to pay seperately (at a 7-11, etc.) Your school should be able to help you out with signing them up though
Thanks.
I think the Legislature just changed that to six months.
Right you are!
8. Stricter Restrictions Shall Be Enforced on Access to NHI Benefits by New Residents and Individuals Who Have Stayed Overseas for a Long Period of Time:
(1) Rather than allowing immediate access to the NHI benefits by "any previous NHI enrollment records " upon their return to Taiwan, the regulations shall be amended to allow access to NHI only when the applicant has “ever enrolled in the NHI within the past two years”.
(2) For the following applicants, access to the NHI benefits shall only be allowed when the applicant has lived or completed household registration in the country for more than six months: applicants who have returned to Taiwan and completed/regained household registration for the first time, or applicants who are holding resident certificates for living in Taiwan. The rule shall not apply to applicants who are employed in the country, government employees working overseas, or their families.
Dang.
