Hello , firstly apologies if im regurgitating questions that have already been answered…ive spent a good few hours reading online from official and unofficial sources and I am not certain what I should do.
I have an employment contract from a Taiwanese company that I will be using to obtain an ARC with. I am a UK citizen, but have not lived in the UK for 10 years.
1.When I apply for an ARC at my local embassy, will I need to provide documentation from the UK regarding my criminal background? or will I need to provide a local background check from my country of residence? or…both? or neither —it seems clear that for an APRC I would need to provide the documentation for the process myself, but I cant work out if its actually required for the ARC or not.
2 I have a minor offence on my record. Possession of a small amount of a controlled substance. this offence took place 18 years ago, and I received a fine. It has never had any effect on me or my life until now! from what I can see, I have to declare (or not declare) any criminal history in order to get a Visa (im assuming this is a pre-requisite of the ARC?)
3.If I declare this offence…am I likely to be unsuccessful in my attempt to get a visa? If I dont declare it, what is the likelihood of it being discovered? If I get the Visa issued, would Taiwanese immigration conduct their own background check?
the official Taiwan immigration page seems to suggest that only a background check of the last 5 years is required? if this is the case, and I have been abroad for the duration of that time do I even need to mention my UK record?
you’re worrying way too much about this, just say you need a 60 day to see all the sites and bicycle around Taiwan. Throw in something about orchids too since they probably had to promote the shit out of it anyway. You’ll get the Work permit and ARC after you land anyway. They don;t care what kind of deviant reprobate you are/were until you apply for an APRC. They let Jimi stay on the island and teach children ffs!. :ohreally:
You only get an APRC after sending me a medium-sized donation which I then split with Northcoast Surfer, the local heavy.
You definitely don’t need it for the visitor visa either (had one of them too).

Tanks for your replies.from what you say, I’m guessing the best thing for me to do is lie on my visa application and get an arc when I arrive? I’m a bit uneasy about doing thatbut I don’t want my visa application to be rejected out of hand.I’m just confused…are you telling me that visa applicants backgrounds are never checked? Even when the arc is applied for? As I mentioned I already have a job and a work permit
That’s kind of an unclear rule as I had to get a criminal record from my home country for my APRC even though I live in Taiwan for 15 years and my home country does not give criminal records for the time after I left my home country … being 15 years ago, so all I get is a paper with information older than 15 years … and yes, I guess you need to provide criminal records from all the countries you live/lived in for a substantial period probably for the last 5 years. But, who knows.
In Taiwan officialdom, a Clean-Criminal Record Documentation (commonly called “CCRD”) should show that you have no CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS within the last FIVE YEARS.
CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS are different from CIVIL CONVICTIONS, ADMINISTRATIVE SANCTIONS/FINES, etc.
Obviously, your violations of the civil code or various administrative codes have no effect on your obtaining a CCRD. And . . . . . any CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS over five years in the past are not counted either.
Is it true that I do not need a background check when getting an ARC? I have called NIA several of times and they keep telling me that I need to do it. I carry a visitor visa.
