Are dogs allowed?

No doggie carry case? Are you placing the dog on the table top or placing your dog on the chair? feeding the dog?

Yes, there are many well behaved dogs in shops, restaurants, etc. And there are many who are not. Yapping, lunging at every person who walks by, etc.

I just wonder why many pet owners are so adamant about not using carry cases when in shops and elsewhere.

It is my pet peeve why so many owners do not leash their dogs. Not even a collar with a dog tag. If the furry creature gets lost, he’s lost. No way to give it back. But they always say “oh, he never leaves my side”. They do not think that an startled dog can run faster than a scooter…

So they always carry their pooch with their bare hands. Question: where do they carry the doggie poop bags? The water bottle? Wiping tissues? Snacks? Disinfectant? Extra money? Or am I the only pet owner whose doggie bag resembles a diaper bag?

The lack of basic common sense (aka HYGIENE) with dogs in eating zones is still stunning to me. Obviously this is not the dog’s fault. But it makes me wonder what other filthy things are going on outside my line of vision.

But hey, at least these people are no throwing rocks at stray animals, which is the basic attitude I saw in Taiwan when I arrived.

I like dogs…but don’t like dogs in restaurants. At a nice place for brunch we saw dogs almost every time we were there. Once we saw two wealthy ladies (my wife recognized them…she said they were famous) chatting away while a foreign maid took care of their dog…spoon feeding the dog at their table. I never saw the two ladies even look at the dog. Another time at the same restaurant a large dog lunged at me as I turn the corner into the dining area…actually scared me. A couple was keeping the dog under their table but the dog would get restless and lunge at people as they walked by.

The trophy wives of Taiwan.

A lot superficial people will have dogs so they can tell friends that they have dogs and how much they have to spend on them on a monthly basis. Gives them that one up on letting your girlfriends know how much your hubby earns.

Think of it this way, at least they aren’t being abandoned on the side of the street.

While like dogs seems I can’t escape a few very loud dogs near us. Two years ago we lived in a housing complex with a basketball court. Every afternoon a guy would shoot baskets and bring 3 dogs with him. As soon as he tied them up at the court they starting yelping and barking. One hour per day. Last year we moved into a house about a mile away. Who knew that the guy would then start leaving his dogs with a friend (who already had 2 dogs) who lives about 200 meters from us? He only visits them occasionally and the dogs seem to go nuts when he is there with them. The noise from the barking is incredible. Our friends who live about 800 meters away hear them barking. They can bark non-stop for hours. For 6 months the dogs ran wild in the neighborhood and were in our yard almost daily. They chased down birds and animals. Tore into garbage bags (tossed by strangers around the area). Ate the neighbors shoes at his front door. An absolute nuisance. Luckily they are now fenced in and not running around…only have to tolerate the noise.

I’m planning to take a road trip to the countryside (Hualien, Taitung, Yilan etc, no particular preference at this stage) over the QingMing long weekend. We will likely be driving and will have two dogs with us, both mixed breeds, one medium and one large.

I have tried googling for dog friendly accommodations, restaurants and activities etc given that they will be with us for the entire weekend however results are few and mostly dated.

Any fellow forumosans who have done something similar and can share their experience?

Cheers!
