I have had several bad experiences with shops in HK. I think they are in the habit of ripping off tourists. As Taiwan has not many tourists and they know I live here, they do not rip me off or they simply have different ethics.
I lived and worked in HK for over 6 months and I had the general impressions that shop owners in HK were rather tricky and not trustworthy. I won’t buy any electronics in HK again, unless it was from Fortress or someplace like that. Please don’t tell me about your guy on such and such street as HK shop keepers are very good at being nice to customers and ripping you off with a smile and you not even knowing it and actually saying thank-you to the guy.
Besides, since I live in Taiwan if I can buy it for only a little more here in Taiwan, I would say that it is much much better since the guy is local if I have any trouble. Wouldn’t you all agree?
I baught my old Canon G2 there, two and a half years ago for what was then the equivelant to $18,000 and, it was one of the purchases that I’ve ever made. In North America tehy were selling for near $30,000 at the time. The only reason that I parted with it was that I’m looking into a new Nikon D100.
I think that as with all “good deals” the buyer should always beware…
As well…I was only agreeing with your point Hobart. Anyone that’s been to Hong Kong and any of it’s markets would have no choice but to do so. I happen to have had some understanding in what it was I was that I was buying and how it worked as well as what to look for.
It’s generally a bad idea to go into any purchase altogether blind.
As for telling about the guy on so and so street…I only mentioned the name of the market as, (at least back then) the better deals on electronics were more easily found there.
Depends on what you want to buy. If it is a videocam or digital camera go to the Bo Ai Rd/Kai Feng St. camera area and also the Guanghua Computer market area.
What is it that you are looking for? You basically just have to ask all of the shops that sell what you are looking for if they have shuihuo of the product that you want.
