My original post was NOT a troll and it was absolutely in good faith. Sandman and DB you are self-righteous mother hens and I can’t stand you trying to question my sincerity and trying to proclaim me some awful person for even QUESTIONING some things about “saving” animals. Honestly, disgusts me.
To those with leveler heads, my comments on Shilin were obviously untrue and done because, frankly, I’m pissed about the way I was treated at the outset.
I am looking for a kitten. I do not know how to proceed. I would like to not support an awful enterprise. I would also like to not be made to feel like scum if I don’t adopt a one-eyed, 3 legged animal (which I’m sure are all lovely, relax) that needs shots 6 times a day or something. I am NEW to animals in Taiwan, and my significant other has NEVER owned a pet and only recently has come around to the idea. Yes, significant other wants a “cute” kitten.
Also, we would like a white one. Superficial or not, we have our reasons. I thought maybe, just maybe, I could find help here, but I am NOT interested in adopting from some crusader who drives around all weekend looking for kittens who “need” to be rescued unless that seriously is something that needs to be done to help these animals. That is why I asked my initial questions and stated up front that I’m not all-knowing and was looking for comments specifically about my acknowledged pessimism.
Can I just add that not everyone is at the same point along the spectrum of wanting to help animals. Just as it is abhorrent to some I would look at a cat at a store, I might not like your SUV, your leather shoes, your failure to coach little league, or the amount of money you give to an orphanage in Hualien. But if you came to me saying you didn’t think everyone driving a Prius and eating granola was all the pious and wanted to know if this was too cynical an attitude and were looking for some in-between measures you could take to help the environment short of going off the grid, I just might respond to you without calling you a prick and getting all self-righteous and sensitive. Heaven forbid I’m looking to help out in a way that suits my situation.
Lastly, there are a bunch of dogs on the way up to my house. People walk in this area a lot, like old people for exercise. They all feed the dogs and the dogs seem happy. No, I haven’t performed a medical exam on them, but they seem healthy enough too. Honest question, if we do consider a dog as well as a cat, is this the type of dog I need to get if I want to pitch in and do a good thing?? I don’t think these dogs would be happy at all living inside and not “on the run,” but I don’t know. Also, we would want a puppy, and might even want a certain breed. Is this just a really bad thing? Anyway, a mini Australian bulldog or mini English bulldog is what we are considering. Sorry if it isn’t altruistic enough.

I would suggest to contact a local, professional, animal rescue group. One organization recently had a benefit at the Brass Monkey (ASPCA?)and I’m sure they could put you in touch with a rescue group or you can probably find it through their website. They should be very good at matching your wants/abilities to a pet with known behaviors to ensure that it is a successful match.
If you would drop the defenses people would respond to you better.
You’ve already been given an answer. No one cares if you have a request for a certain color or breed.
No one expects you to adapt an animal that has needs beyond what you can handle (though if your pet does get ill you will be epxected to step up and take care of it. I’m sure you know that and I’m sure you will do that.)
The dogs up in the hills being fed are living an okay life as long as they are healthy but in Taiwan’s heat and humidity many suffer terrible skin diseases as you’ve probably seen. The Aixin Mamas who care for them can’t care for them all and while this pack is doing alright there are thousands more who aren’t. Over a hundred thousand dogs were captured last year. Do you think they got them all?
No one is expecting you to adopt one of these if you don’t want to. No one.

He’s still getting operations as they have to do it one step at a time. Not sure what the total will be.
I think he’s being helped by Taida right? It cost me NT3000 per day to have TuDou there…be careful, you may not be able to pay it on such short notice! Are they taking skin from his body to cover that area?
I agree, animals out in the middle of nowhere are propably better off…but I think most of the animals advertised on here were found on building sites etc.

I see. So I post several times giving you the feedback you claim to want, even give you a list of animals adoption agencies and instead of responding to my posts you have some fun with Sandman. Yeah, wouldn’t want to question your sincerity would we?

Right. I’m going to sort this out tomorrow. Please, people, try to be civil. Destitute, abused and neglected animals require our compassion and level-headedness. Nasty bickering is counter-productive.
