Are you biased against China?

I may have been lazy in giving only fascists as an example of a type of leadership which uses nationalism, rather than referring more precisely to the more relevant term ‘totalitarian’, but there is nothing meaningless about the terms; both involve oppressive levels of centralization of authority, suppression of the opposition through censorship and often terror and murder. Fascism may be more precisely dictatorial, whereas totalitarianism may extend beyond the leadership of one individual, but the gist is similar – oppression of dissent and of human rights by a central power. This is clearly the nature of the Chinese state, and it is one of the embodiments of evil in our world. Hardly a ‘meaningless epithet’, although it’s no surprise that the board’s CCP apologists will rush to term it such.
I would call the CCP an “authoritarian” regime. An example of a “totalitarian” regime would be North Korea or Stalinist Russia. “Facist” properly refer to Nazi Germany and other regimes with similar ideology that emerged during the time.
My intention was not to be an “apologist” for the CCP, but try and look at its record in greater historical and international context. In any case, it seems very unlikely that it will be overthrown any time soon- the best hope for change lies with reformers in the party.

I’m going to leave this post for all to hate and all to evaluate. It’s right fucked up. I actually like it…Bye*

Without a doubt the most biased I’ve seen towards China and Asians in general come from the Australians. I’ve known Chinese/Taiwanese which had from bigoted comments to rocks thrown at them while being there. They seem to take racism and provincialism to a whole new level.

yep, that’s right. all of us aussies are right arseholes.

see, you’re judging all australians as one mass, instead of singling out the government’s policies and perhaps the stereotypical characteristics of the australian psyche. exactly what people object to blanket criticism of ‘the Chinese’ for.

where’s the difference here, ralphy?

i agree that there are racists in Australia, just like there are in other countries, but i don’t think that is the majority viewpoint. i am sorry to hear that your friends had rocks thrown at them, but that is a rather extreme case, i would have to say. can you provide more details? what were the Chinese people doing? stealing fruit? parading the Chinese ideal of KTV at 4 am? pray tell, what brought on this attack. and if it was an attack, then get the police involved, man. the laws are strong in Australia for that kind of thing, and the police are generally eager to assist. that’s another of the many differences, by the way.

What…the…fuck?

Aussies throw rocks at us Poms too. Don’t take so personally.

You should take steps to fit in too, like ordering Fosters at the bar and wearing a Crocodile Dundee hat with corks hanging off it. That’ll make them much more friendly.

They tried to run me down, set my shoes on fire, steal my toothpaste, set me in a car full of drunk ex-altar boys, and finally abandon me on the east coast of Flinders Island during the dry season. First and only time I ever considered eating a dead wombat. But that is a little off-topic.

Its always a shock when someone encounters racism for the first time, perhaps when they return to their own countries, they’ll look upon the Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesians and Filapino’s with a bit more humanity.

When foreigners enter Australia, they can expect the same rights as anyone else (and the same wages) which is a far cry from the indentured labor models that apply throughout Asia. I’m sorry to say, but most Asian countries are well behind…

By the way, do you know what the difference between a racist and a tourist is?

What’s wrong with eating wombat? Not everyone can afford bloody filet steak like you posh city bastards.

Er, he was road kill, and there was a fire ban on the island. I like me exotic fare as much as Anthony Bourdain, but I draw the line at Wombat sashimi.
This is a question oft debated on an Australian forum of which I’m a member. Various supporters of the PRC government (some of whom are ethnic Chinese, some of whom are not), usually present the following arguments in favour of their case that democracy cannot work in China:

 • Democracy is a uniquely Western idea which the Chinese people don’t understand
This is an old argument that was once used by the English and French to disparage the Germans (because of their Prussian overlords) and Eastern Europeans (for their “slavic”, lesser races, etc. from the viewpoint of the English, French, Western Europe, etc.).

I’m sure at some point, people were skeptical that Japan could be democratic because of its shogunate/imperial legacy.

To me, those who espouse this view are either lazy or cynical or don’t understand human nature.
“Basically, most people suck at China,” Mr. Snodgrass says. "First you have the tourists, who by their very nature are retarded and valueless. Then you have the temporary residents, who live a year or two and then leave. Their understanding of this country is about equal to a bug’s understanding of my gargantuan brain.

“The long term residents maybe have some value, but they’re usually too stupid to understand the complex aspects of Chinese society, such as massive industrial dumping, or pooing on the sidewalk”.

This year’s winner, Mr. Snodgrass, has been living in China for eight years, speaks Chinese fluently, has a Chinese wife, and only eats Chinese food. He works in the administrative unit of a large Chinese electronics company, where he uses a set of five hundred stamps to stamp anything put in front of him—a position almost impossible for most other foreigners to get.
HG

According to whom? Morrison, Backhouse and Bland? Their writings on the Empress and newspaper reporting of the time have been proven to be false allegations against her character, often by people who never even met the woman.
She had absolutely no power and was more of a prisoner to the Manuchu Imperial system than anything else. She had no means of being corrupt or influencing policy, towards foreigners or domestic. There is also no evidence that she poisoned anyone or was in anyway involved in (or even able to be) court intrigues. In fact, current evidence suggests that she was guiless as well as guiltless of any wrong doing doing her “reign”. Reign being in inverted commas because she had no power whatsoever.

i bow before your powers of internet search and knowledge.

He’s got another post that merits mentioning:
BEIJING, CHINA—A government sponsored research initiative has discovered information that could radically change China’s perception of its place the world.

The Project for the Initiative of Learning about Various Matter for the Glorious Betterification of Primary School Text Books, or PILVMGBPSTB, was instituted to fact-check information in Chinese text books.

Prof Liu Xiang, a renowned historian at Beijing University, was chosen to head the world history research department. He claims his discoveries shocked him.

“Everywhere else in the world is also really old” said Prof. Liu. “We always learn that China has 5000 years of cultural heritage, and that therefore we are very special. It appears that other places also have some of this heritage stuff. And are also old. Like, really old.”
Are you biased against China?

Heck yeah! but it has nothing to do with living in Taiwan. If anything, I am seeing more and more similarites between the common people of Taiwan and those of China. There is a world of difference between the governments, but my experience has been that many Taiwanese will lie, cheat, and steal from you while pretending to be your friend in exactly the same way that the folks across the strait do. It is culturally acceptable to lie, and saving ‘face’ and keeping harmony are valued much more than honesty and truthfulness. I still see Taiwanese as Chinese people. Same language, same culture, same music/arts, same values, same lying, same medicine, same martial arts, same etc… Despite what many do not want to admit, Taiwan and Taiwanese people share a huge amount of similarities with China and the Chinese people. One of these similarities is that there are also some great people in both places.

I am biased against China, but I can’t put the blinders on and pretend everything is fine in Taiwan, and for that matter my own country.

What about America though Prof? It appears they don’t have, like, any of this heritage stuff. They’re young. Like, really young. Makes you like, think, or something. Don’t bogart that thing, man.

Although you are right that they share a lot of similarities, I do think that the language, music, and basically culture are quite different.

As for the cheating and lying? You meet those people everywhere in the World. Look at California or New Yourk or Britain (crap load of stealing).

If Taiwanese want to steal something from you, they usually suck really bad at being stealthy. But the Chinese… oh boy…
