Army mission in Northern Ireland finally over

Awww. And here was me hoping this was going to be a story about a couple of squaddies holed up in a ditch in Monaghan for the last 20 years, unaware that times had moved on.

There’s a fantastic plot right there! “Well me da first noted da milk missing of a mornin . . .”

(apologies for not noticing this thread earlier, TC)

I think this thread didn’t get many replies because saying that the troubles are now “officially over” doesn’t hold much water anymore, since it has always been a (very long slow) process. This is definitely a very important step of course, not so much because the troops have left, but because the situation was such that they COULD leave.

Let’s hope the (minority of) extremists on each side can continue to become less and less extreme so that maybe some day most of this whole thing will seem like a distant memory.

Now what we need to do is get rid of all the crims that have nothing better to do now than act like mafiosos. There are a right few of them.

I do worry that in a few years the troubles might all kick off again. The good thing is that there is such a majority of people who just want peace now, that it would be less likely to happen. You only have to look at the history of Ireland to see that the Irish are pretty infamous for in-fighting though.

And give me a nice bottle of Talisker any day.

Irish -
Well there it is…its long since degraded from a “political” problem to one of just various thugs vying for loot and control using that mask for their crimes.

The IRA declared a “moratorium/end” a few years back. Seeking legitamacy they were.
