Asthma medication in Taiwan

I’m moving to Taiwan in about a month. I have had very mild asthma all my life, for which I usually take Fluticasone (Flovent) or Beclomethasone to prevent asthma attacks. I’ve actually been off my medication for almost six months now with no problems, but I imagine Taiwan will have more pollution than Vancouver Island, and I anticipate I’ll need the meds again; however, they’re quite expensive here, and I’m wondering if I should buy them here or wait and buy them in Taiwan in case they’re cheaper. So, first, are these medications available in Taiwan, and second, how much do they usually cost?

Thanks.

Hi. The drugs you need are available here, although you will need to go to a Doctor to get them. Most are sold under generic names,so you may not find the original Brand name so easily. The cost is low (if you have a Healthcard) and (I am guessing ) not very expensive ,even if you pay full price.
Easy to find a Doctor and ask for what you need…you may get a dozen extra Medications prescribed also…( this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact ,I think,Doctors get paid for quantity of drugs prescribed, not the quality).

Hi epinephrine,

I was born with asthma. Honestly unless you are walking among heavy traffic in downtown Taipei or doing some serious work outs you’ll be fine; although I have found that inhalers are cheaper in T-Dubs than they are here in the States.

Welcome! Hope you’ll enjoy your stay here and let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

Take it easy,
R

Life long asthmatic. Ventolin is over the counter and widely available. So is feneterol. Most Doc’s will give you a one month scrip and then the longest you can get is 3 months refills. It’s a real PIA. These drugs like symbicort and flixonase are $$$ and doc’s are reluctant to prescribe. I control my asthma well and my peak flows are high due to excercise, so at time I need to go off meds to re-up my scrip.

How’s everything? epinephrine? since it’s summer now, i guess it’s not so risky for you who have asthma now…but still plz be cautious and look up for the clinics & hospitals near by where you work & live. Take care. Like me, i’m allergic to NSAIDs, pain-killers, so i’m so afraid i’ll allergic to some food i’ve never tried in TW when i’m in another country. so i hv some antihistamine med with me. and try to know the ingredient i eat, or cook familiar stuff all the time…lol…at least i survived for the whole yr. :sunglasses:
