Is it just me or does there seem to be an above average influx of newbies of below average intellect/English ability? I’m not naming names but either these guys are trolls or they’re really special. Any way to stop them?

You’re probably right, shouldn’t have used it. But is it really any better to say “Attack of the intellectually challenged posters?” It’s just another way of saying the same thing. “Retard” originally was used in English because all the other words meaning the same thing (idiot, moron, cretin etc.) had become pejorative. I can’t really have a rant about stupid posts without using some such word can I?
