Australia : International students are cash cows?

Germany still can be free. There are many programs in English now in Europe that can be free for Taiwanese (if your lower income even free food). Australia prices to study are quite high thus the Cash cow students going there, the problem is many think it’s expensive to study in Europe or don’t know they have English programs (like Taiwan now has).

Can you name any of Germany’s universities ranked in the top 20 in the world? No. There are five Australian universities ranked in the top 20 and many more in the top 50 universities in the world.

Also the Australian dollar is very cheap and students can work part time making good money. Enough to pay their tuition fees.

There might also be a preference to study in a native English speaking country. And there aren’t many of those and Australia’s university tuition isn’t unreasonable compared to the other native English speaking countries.

Geographic location as well. Most international students come from China and India. Australia is closer than the US, Canada, the UK or NZ to both of these places (for India it would depend largely on where in India and where in Australia)

Edit: i know the UK is in Europe but I’m answering on the assumption that when people say ‘European university’ they are referring to continental Europe. Not the UK/Ireland/Iceland

There’s an expectation that international students will work in Australia too. How do you think most people immigrate to Australia permanently?

But honestly the students mostly want to stay and work in Australia. For many of them their reason for studying in Australia is a pathway to permanent residency.

Australian universities do a great job of marketing themselves. Australia is a great, maybe one of the best places, to be an employee. It makes sense that graduates want to stay.

A young chap I sent to RMIT as a student to study at RMIT Tafe Associate Degree in Professional Writing and Editing in the 1990s, graduated, came back to Taiwan worked for a radio station as a copy writer. Rule at the time for skilled migrants was 6 month post graduation work experience. His skilled migration case was approved in 6 weeks lol.

Nowadays graduates can stay on and work in Australia and get PR.
Also many people assume you need a degree to get PR in Australia which is also not true. Some occupations can be assessed soley on work experience.

I have a friend who is about 27 ish now. He completed both high school and university (Pharmacy) in Australia then got a graduates visa.
He is eligible for permanent residency now but he’s putting it off until his current visa is about to expire so he can hold off prematurely paying the fee for his English test + whatever the visa fees are.

His long term goal is to open his own Pharmacy - and such is the success of Australia’s immigration and economy

@Taiwan_Luthiers your posts just show how ignorant and clueless you are when you bombard other peoples posts about Australia with comparisons to other countries.

To show how clueless you really are you suggest Australia look at taking students from India. Students from India make up the 2nd largest group of foreign students in Australia. DUH!!!

Australia has the second highest numbers of international students after the USA. Why do you think that is? How would you know that the pathway to German PR is easier then Australia’s path to PR after graduation? You don’t. You are talking out of your arse yet again.

PS nobody cares how much you paid as an instate student in Texas. This is a thread about Australia. Australia does not have instate or out of state tuition fees.

To be fair, a lot of the contribution to rankings in THE and QS (especially the QS rankings) comes from the number of international students at an institution, so Australian universities get a bit of an unfair push up the ladder here due to their massive proportions and massive absolute numbers of overseas students.

many German universities are just as good if not better than higher-ranked Australian universities, on research output, value for money, academic rigour, and other quality of education metrics. such as the whole TU system, or even smaller universities like Gottingen, Heidelberg, Humboldt, etc.

The free market disagrees.

Although you’re probably right. But a BYD or
other Chinese made car would be just as good a fit if not a better fit for virtually everyone but people still buy Mercedes at a much higher price.

The human race doesn’t always make sense

I’ve been an academic for nearly 40 years, and running our graduate admissions here for 15 years, so I might be able to see some trends.

Your CV doesn’t change people’s actions? I’m not sure of your point.

well, people vote with their feet, and I agree that many more are choosing Australia to study over, say, Germany. I suspect that has a lot more to do with many other aspects of living in Australia than simply the quality of the education. Like the climate, the potential for later moving to Australia… and the fact that you’re not surrounded by Germans :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

So, even though I can see the value in German engineering, etc., degrees, many others might not be able to, or might choose not to.

That’s my point

Also my point.

Also my point.

I still don’t understand the need to flash your credentials which were totally irrelevant.

Those rankings are mostly an indicator of research funding. Have you looked at the methodologies for teaching excellence? No.

Nah, it’s relevant. He’s an industry insider with decades of experience.

Maybe if s/he provided some insight, sure

Some have good time others have really bad experiences (some friends come back with stories like in this link)

So do you get Taiwanese apply for your graduate school? My friends I recommend cheaper places like Europe or Japan

I agree, it shows he knows more than others as he works the industry.

I also worked in the industry placing students into programs. Many of those students gained permanent residency as skilled immigrants later on.

However I stopped the buying and selling of people for other business opportunities.

I dare say many famous universities don’t teach. You learn as much just reading the materials than sit through some professors boring lectures. I know many professors at UT Austin couldn’t teach for shit. It’s a good place for research however but I would say those rankings mean nothing for vast majority of undergraduate students.

Community college professor teaches as well and don’t cost nearly as much. However admission to good universities do get you connections which means much more than whatever information you learn there. You know stuff like feeder schools, or whatnot. Best way to get into certain companies is to graduate at their feeder school.
