Australian/Kiwi cafes and shops

hey, I have moved to Taiwan recently and realised us Aussies are a rare breed. I would like to know where to go for those times I feel homesick. If you could help inform me of where I could find the following in Taipei, that would be great.

Aussie cafes (FYI i know theres already a gloria jeans and outback steakhouse isnt really australian)
Shops that sell Aussie or Kiwi food
Bars that hold AFL or Rugby nights and events (wce all the way!)
Social gathering events

Cheers, aussiejt

There’s a place called something like “Kiwi House” up around, I think, Mingde MRT station. Just look out of the train as you go northbound and you’ll see the sign to your left. I know it’s north of Zhishan, not entirely sure which stop. No idea what they do there.

U wot m8?

haha yeah i dont think we have outback steakhouse in Aus. the actual brand is from Tampa, FL and they use Australian paraphernalia as their marketing ploy.

Cheers for the Kiwi cafe tip. I will be working up that way so its good to know.

Woolloomooloo on Xinyi Road is a favourite. The newer branch was reviewed by the Taipei Times here:

Guy

KGB (Kiwi Gourmet Burgers) off Shida Lu.

Mr Sausage is an Aussie and Yes, he makes sausage, it’s not a porn name.

There is Pink Penguin Bakery, it’s meant to be an Aussie bakery, they do pies and lamingtons, they look pretty good. But not been there yet.

Otherwise KGB is pretty amazing, I heard they had Monteiths but I didn’t see it last time I was there. They have a burger with beetroot in it, which kind of made my life. But check out the standard supermarkets, like Jasons 101, City Super, I know that Carrefour had an Aussie section in their international aisle. I saw Speights last week too! That was pretty epic. Also you can find San Remo pasta products in more places.

There are two Kiwi cafes in Nankan where I’m living but I’ve not been to either.

I was in Seoul last week and got a Jesters mince and cheese pie, it was the most glorious thing. It’s like I died and went back to NZ…

Flick me a PM if you wanna meet up, I don’t have an Aussie accent but I got pretty good at putting one on when I lived in Melbourne…

g’day… whilst they aren’t exactly the same as the Aussie style, Frankie’s Pies in Dingxi has a good selection of meat pies, sausage rolls, and quiches… facebook.com/frankiespiestw

KGB’s burgers are pretty good, and their milkshakes are just like we get back home

Costco is where you can buy aussie steaks and lamb, as well as Tim Tams (sometimes) and Arnotts Shapes biscuits.

Jason’s Market in Taipei 101 used to have Bulla Ice Creams, and 7-11 sells Weiss Ice Cream bars.

Jason’s also sells Weetbix, Vegemite, and a few other aussie treats.

Feel free to PM me if you would like more info

Thanks guys!

Leo’s Tuck Shop does pretty authentic kiwi pies https://www.facebook.com/tuckshop.tw

And the Brass Monkey has NRL and AFL games on Friday and Saturday in the early evenings, a few on this week

I’m really happy to see so many helpful responses. Particularly from the C. (or should that be K?) crowd. Next time I want real NY pizza or blintzes Leo with latkes (with f* sour cream) I expect your help. (anyone?, Anyone???)

Now on to more important things, where can I find the lefse? The gjetost I have, but butter without one’s bread is a meager swallowing.

 just joking before you get your long underwear all cramped up jumping out of the lazyboy.

did that work?

drunk so early?

Apparantly so, but early is subjective

I stopped by Pink Penguin last night after reading the earlier post about it. Picked up 6 frozen pies (chicken and beef) but have yet to try them. Note: it’s strictly take-out; there are no facilities for in-house dining.

Let me know how they go! Was it quite easy to find/get to?

Their pies are great.

It’s pretty easy to get to - just a short walk from Yongchun MRT or a slightly longer walk from Taipei City Hall MRT.

Fantastic! All us ANZACS should go on a pie crawl (pub crawl but pie edition…)

Petrol station 3 am in the morning great or otherwise great?

Great for Taiwan. By far the best pie you can get here.

Will check it out next time I’m in Taipei then.

Wow, the cf stamp of approval! I’ll have to go and check them out.
