[Authentication] Criminal Record check

I recently emailed Hess for information about getting a job. I was given a link to a site that had an application form. One of the criteria’s was giving a criminal record statement. I have noticed this is a requirement in alot of positions in Taiwan. Am I right?
Anyway, I called my mother to get her to apply for one in Australia.Apparently I need to sign in front of a justice of the peace. Not too sure :s
Has anyone from Australia applied or know the procedures?

Thank in advance. :notworthy:

Just thought I would pop this question up again. This has turned out harder than I thought. How important is it to have this document? Do all work places ask for it? or just Hess?
I may have to go back to Australia to get it

No help from the Australian Represenative Office in Taipei? As far as I know you don’t need to give it to them, of course they can ask & when you consent that’s another thing. Same for locals (incidentally we just had this topic in the office today …): criminal record only with consent of the “subject”. However, you’d probably fall through the roster right away …

Thank you for the reply. I am actually working in Japan at the moment but will be coming to Taiwan soon. When I got the Japanese work visa all the criminal checks were made through the Japanese embassy, I never thought I would need to get documents to prove I have no record for Gaining employment in Taiwan.

My wife is Taiwanese, will the document be required for any other paperwork needed to get an ARC or whatever it is

I applied for mine while in Australia. Don’t know how you’d go getting one while in Taiwan.

But if you can get your mum to get one for you, you’ll also have to get it verified at some other places too.
Get your mum to call the TECO place. They’ll screw her around for a few minutes and tell you that you’ll need to get it verified at some government office before you send it to them for verification also. (sorry cant remember the name of the gov office, cant find my certificate!)

Once you get that done, get your mum to send it over. And once its in your hot little hands, you’ll have to get it translated and verified again. I’m sure you’ll need a locals help with this one.

And once you’ve done all that, you’ll be like “you F#$cken bastards! all that trouble!”. Because anyone who views it will only view it for 1 second.
But it’s nice to have. “Look man! clean criminal record!”…then you break all the laws in Taiwan within your first month of living here. (Some of us, like myself, within the first week!)

good luck

Some good advice thanks. Still trying some other avenues to gain this bloody thing. Have you been asked regularly for it since being in Taiwan? Can I avoid this hassle all together?
Or is it a big advantage to have?

Every job you apply for will require this certificate because they need it for you to obtain an ARC…but you mentioned your wife is Taiwanese! Whole 'nother ball game!

You’ll need that certificate to apply for a JFRV (Joining Family Resident Visa).
Contact Richard Hartzell about that business. He helped us out with the forms and some very useful advice! (Thanks Richard!)

There’s a shitload of other certificates you’ll require as well. Search and yee shall find! (search: JFRV)

Once all thats out of the way, you’ll then be able to work anywhere for any number of employers. (you’ll have a holy “Open Work Permit”)

they rawk…speaking of things that rawk, Richard needs to chime in about now and set you straight!

Edit: oh yeah, btw, you probably won’t need the criminal certificate after you get your JFRV…but keep it anyway…you never know!

Here is a link for the JFRV aplication requirements, although it is from the year 2000. Maybe a little out of date :s you need medical examination as well :unamused: is this incase they want to recruit me in their army :astonished:
