My Nissan X-Trail is from 2005 and has done 145.000km so far. I never cared much for the revolution counter because it has auto transmission and the damned revolution counter is in the middle of the dash board, not where it should be (in front of the driver) so it is difficult to watch it when driving. Especially when overtaking someone.
No wife told me the turns sometimes go up to 7500 rpm, with the red area starting at 6500 rpm (end of the scale would be 8000). Is this normal? In my memory the car did not do that initially.
At home I drove manual gear shift and of course the revolution counter was right in front of me so I took care of gear shift by myself. But I thought auto transmission should take care of that.
OK, only happens at kickdown when I am in a hurry.
Sounds odd. The engine management computer will usually have a rev limiter set to prevent the engine from destroying itself. I don’t know off-hand how the rev counter in your car works (mechanical or electronic) but it might be feasible that it’s reading incorrectly. Just have Nissan check it out. One of the beauties of Yuelong ownership is that service is dirt cheap. I take it you’ve been servicing the car according to schedule eh? I have a friend with a (well-serviced) X-Trail that is at 120,000km and still running like new.
TC and Redwagon, thanks for the advice. We have serviced the car regularly but after year 3 by some independent garages and they often miss out on what’s important, don’t connect the motor analyzer even if they have one etc. I will probably try to have it corrected at our cheap garage (wife fancies them) and otherwise see Nissan about it.
yeah, that’s definitely too high. the only reason why it should be shifting at redline is if you are gunning it (pedal to the metal), and it is shifting gears while you’re still gunning it. i’m not familiar w/that model…but w/a redline of 6.5k rpms i would imagine normal shifting range to be at a rather pedestrian 2 - 3k rpms.
I would imagine that spinning at over 7,000 revs is very noticeable indeed as the engine would be extremely loud (screaming) at that point. I would suggest that if it isn’t sounding like that then get your RPM gauge checked.
If it is indeed revving this high, then you could have your throttle position sensor checked for a fault.
If the engine is revving very high and the vehicle is not changing gear then you may have an issue with the gearbox computer or clutches.
If the engine is revving high, the vehicle changes gear but is not accelerating quickly then you might check your clutches after first checking your transmission fluid level as they are likely worn out or damaged. Depending on which gear (if any) you are in when this phenomenon happens will determine which clutches are likely in need of replacement. It is often recommended however to change all of them at once as the cost of re-disassembling a gearbox later to change the others is of course much less cost effective. It is also the case normally that contaminants from worn or damaged gearbox innards can often cause long term damage to the gearbox as a whole. Auto boxes therefore are often simply changed for new ones should such catastrophic failures occur.
The Nissan X-Trail is generally reasonable in most areas, including the gearbox. It suffers most faults to its suspension and engine auxiliaries. I have found only two so far out of around a hundred with blown heads or head gaskets, which is still high compared with most Jap vehicles on the used market.
I would hazard a guess that the problem would more likely be an auxiliary component such as an electrical device, a throttle position sensor or computer etc. just going on experience only.
Do check your gearbox fluid before you go ahead with any professional inspection. If it is low then you must locate any leak.
Check the brake bands. I’ve no idea what they are, but I always check them. This is because it involves applying the brakes and accelerator at the same time, which is fun. If your car ends up in the kitchen, there’s a problem.
The transmission fluid has probably never been changed and is probably like water/play doh by now. Ford will sell you a spanner costing 250 quid which will allow you to remove the transmission cover and charge you another 90 quid to put it back on after you lose the filter which goes straight down the nearest drain. Apparently the high cost of the spanner is to deter people who don’t know what they’re doing from removing the transmission sump cover.
On automatics I’ve had in the past they have gone near to the redline when flogged, but to be fair they were quick saloon cars and supposed to do that. It was usually quite good fun as when they changed up they’d spin the rear wheels from all the torque. Hilarious. Not as good as cow tipping, though.
I wouldn’t have thought a jeep is supposed to have the nuts screwed off it. Is it a really big heavy thing with a small engine? Small in this context being under 3.0 litres. Maybe that’s why it’s struggling? I’ve driven underpowered autos in the past and they do tend to rev out a lot.
I once missed half a day of school because the automatic gearbox fell out of the bus I was on. I have lots of similarly amusing automatic gearbox stories. We should meet up for a pint sometime and discuss them. Hilarious. How the winter evenings just fl… [BANG!]
Thanks for the advice, Sulavaca and LL. In deed it has only a 2.0 engine which always seemed to be struggeling a bit. Right now I am more careful with my leadfoot.
The motor was not really screaming that much, so it sounded more like 6000 rpm to my ears. Did not happen anymore since I wrote about it - or maybe I was a bit more careful when pressind the pedal down.
These free cheap garages are not so good of course. But they are always finished so quickly with the inspection
