Automakers backed up due to semiconductor shortage

The Internet of Things will keep the demand going strong, kind of like how the desktop computers and laptops first helped spur the processor and fab industry in the 90s.
Where the alpha is for investment, is in the encryption embedded within those chips. Think of encryption in ICs like the CCTVs were just after 911. None of them on the streets of the world, and now CCTVs everywhere.

ASEAN is now the top destination for Taiwanese investment.

It’s unlikely that they’re building production facilities to churn out more of the same old commodity items. Semiconductor technology moves on - different processes, different kinds of product, and “chips” doesn’t just mean DRAM and microprocessors for PCs and tablets. Power and RF devices account for a huge slice of the most profitable markets. Innovations in those areas rely on clever processes (and clever uses of existing processes), not shrinking feature sizes.
