Awesome British College in Shanghai Offering UK Degrees!

Hey!- …just thought I’d share this information with all you guys back in Taiwan.

I lived in Taipei for 8 years teaching English… and for the most part, the island was very good to me. However, I found that for a person in my personal situation, an Asian-American who opted to work before going to college, (and thus, without a degree), it was very difficult to find work in any other field, and given the nature of the ESL industry, lived a very unstable life without any job security. I don’t know how many times I got effed over by bosses, and all the unpaid work? Seriously.

Anyways, I was offered the opportunity to come live in Shanghai with my family, who moved here to do business a couple of years ago. I was originally going to enroll at a local college, but through our research, we found a cute little college in the French Concession, The Sino-British College. It’s affiliated with NCUK, (the Northern Consortium of UK Universities) and is partnered with USST, (University of Science and Technology)… the courses are all UK programs, delivered in English, and at the end of it, you get a UK degree! You can even opt to do a couple of years in Shanghai and then transfer to one of the partner colleges in the UK. (Some of the partner colleges are: Leeds, Sheffield, etc.) Additionally, you can opt to take an extra module and get a dual degree, one from NCUK, and another from USST. It’s a sweet deal. And it’s about the same tuition as a local community college back home.

It’s mainly business-oriented. I’m studying Events Management… - I plan to be a filmmaker and will do a Master’s Program in film at Tische (NYU) after graduating from SBC… but there are also courses in Business Management, Finance and Accounting, Marketing,Engineering, etc. The course I’m taking is relevant for General Management, Marketing, Production, Human Resources, etc, and of course, Events Management. I’m definitely enjoying my courses, and Shanghai has been so good to me. Opportunities left and right in every possible direction.

The question is how would one finance a year at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Studying in Shanghai and working on the weekend would not be a problem. The problem is how to finance a year in Leeds.

I apologize for my delay in responding. I’ve been swamped with work!

It sounds like you might be interested in 3+1 Accounting and Finance with Leeds Met? There are many other majors available, including Engineering, Events Management, Business Management, Marketing, etc… that you can choose from. The way it works is that you can enroll for all 4 years in Shanghai, or do 3+1 (3 years in Shanghai / 1 year in the UK) or 2+1, 4+0, etc. There are a range of universities you can choose from in the UK that are all very prestigious. There is also the possibility that you can skip your first year of your Bachelors program due to the fact that your English is so good and you seem to have life experience behind your belt.

I spoke with the Admissions Department regarding your concern, and their response was that depending on your nationality, you can work up to 20 hours in the UK per week, from what I understand. There “may also be options to save money through doing English summer camps during the holidays etc? They also said that, BTW the college offers scholarships of 10,000 – 20,000RMB for good students and the college did give out quite a few last year (THESE ONLY APPLY TO SBC, NOT UK UNIVERSITIES, BUT OF COURSE THAT WOULD BE MONEY SAVED) Obviously there are degrees like Events Management where you don’t need to transfer to the UK, but that is the only business course with that option.” But maybe that’s not your thing? I’m sure there’s a way to manage it.

And besides, having a degree really opens up a world of possibilities. As I mentioned before, I was stuck in a rut in Taipei and couldn’t dig myself out of my hole. But now that I’ve moved to Shanghai, being that this is a much bigger city, and because I’m in a college environment, opportunities have been flowing left and right! I have a great band going, internships, teaching jobs, and I’ve launched my media business recently… you can check out my portfolio here: dimensionpangaea.net . I would never have been in the space to be inspired to do all of this, to have the skills to do it, or even be ready and able to do it! Definitely glad I took the leap and plunge. :slight_smile:
