Awesome Food in Taipei?

He’s got a point on this one. The stuff smells and tastes like lemon-scented dish detergent.

I’ll leave it to you to know what lemon-scented dish detergent tastes like.

Well, it smelled nice, so…

The problem with the coriander in Taiwan is it’s not got a strong flavour. It’s a bit bland.

I forgot to mention cilantro.

I actually don’t mind a little cilantro in Mexican food, but for some reason it doesn’t work for me in Taiwanese food…must be the food.

I don’t mind it if it’s chopped up and in something like. But I don’t want a handful of it tossed over something I’m going to eat.

I think it’s the quantity, I eat it all the time in Mexican AND Thai food, and it’s fine. Same with the friggin ginger, which Taiwan cuisine treats as an actual vegetable rather than a seasoning…

Yeah, this is another pet peeve. I’ll be chomping along happily on some stir fry, and all of the sudden what I thought was a slice of meat turns out to be a big-ass chunk of ginger. Boom…ginger explosion! Not pleasant.

I like both of cilantro and ginger. More is better. Not together, though.

Cilantro is good stuff. Great with tacos. If you don’t like so much of it, just push it side or share with me.

I wont share food with raccoon.

I don’t think a racoon would ask to share, he’d just take what he deserves.

Don’t worry, you ain’t gettin any…

This thread is awesome. Thanks all for sharing. The other thread about how food sucks in Taiwan is interesting… there definitely is a lot of bad/tasteless food in Taipei. But the fact is, with such a sheer quantity of restaurants, there are also a lot of amazing places. And threads like this helps you find them.

One of my old favorites from the student days is A-Ying on Wenzhou St:

They have been around forever and I never get sick of their orange juice chicken. Fantastic post-bike-ride meal if you are coming in off the nearby riverside paths.

I am also a big fan of a newer nearby restaurant, Roux, run by a really nice guy and serving up something I’d never expect to find in Taipei: very high quality Cajun food.

Lastly, Noodlemix near Zhongxiao Xinsheng has the best 意面 I’ve ever tasted. They use real ingredients, e.g. a light sauce made from actual shallots, no powders or chemicals or other crap. You pay double, but double for 意面 is still really cheap and well worth it for the quality.

There’s this place that does Alsatian food near Shilin Night Market, Le Flam. It sounds like it should be snooty and pricey, but it’s quite affordable and really tasty. Haven’t had anything from the menu that wasn’t great.
