Babies not immunised for Hep B

Just went to the local clinic to find out about the 4 months immunisation shots. It would seem that the main difference between here and Australia is that their normal shot does not include Hep B?!?

Anyone know why taiwan wouldn’t be immunising children against hep b, especially in light of the following research done in taiwan by taiwanese universities? Or perhaps the immunisation shots are done at a later age, and if at a later age, why?

[nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE ... 6263362602](http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199706263362602)

It means we are now going to have to hunt around for a hospital that may or may not have the same immunisation shot with the extra added Hep B vaxine.

Ok, appears there is some language barrier, Taiwan has different intervals/timings for each of the shots, Australia does 0, 2, 4 month hep B injections, taiwan does 0, 1, 6 month interval.

I wonder why such a difference!

check the immunization schedule the pediatrician gave you for the shots over the first 2 1/2 years…if hep b wasn’t included then ask your doctor about it and it should be available but you probably have to pay for it…some vaccs are free, most you have to pay for…wouldn’t recommend the free vaccs though…

Do you have specific reasons to not get the free vaccinations?

my son is in kindy now but a few years ago when he was getting shots up the yin yang, i like many other parents, wanted to know what was being shot into his system. the ped. dept. where we were getting them done was very open with us. they provided us with the names and optional shots given. i researched them all. talked to people. doctor friends as well. here and back in NA. there had been well documented cases about some, others took a bit of elbow grease to find out about. IMHO, the vaccs that are free are free for a reason. these vaccs have long term effects on such a small infant that is the focus of your life? don’t you want to triple check what’s going in their system? some of the free vaccs are quite harmful…do your homework…some of the optional ones have some neg ones as well…trust your gut…you are dealing with a medical system that has checks and balances. do you really want to trust someone that is watching the bottom line? you are the parent, be responsible for your child’s welfare. how many kids are f’ed up in the states because some politician thought it was a good idea to lace up some HMO with some extra vaccs for a kid…in this world, not every decision from the top is the right one…
good luck and do your homework before jumping in, pays off in the long run.

With my limited research ability, the only vaccination I have found any reason to be slightly concerned is the controversial MMR shot. These other shots have no real information on them that I can find. Hence the question (:

Which ones are you against, and why?

Do you have a list of the ones given in Taiwan? We’re going to Taiwan when our little one is 6 months old so it would be nice if he’s covered for everything. Something tells me that the list can be different between Taiwan and Sweden.

i can’t tell you what i am or am not against…you as the parent have to trust your own instinct and make that decision…put in the time, you won’t regret it later…

Unfortunately I do not have the exact list.

What we have learnt since is that the reason for the discrepancy is that while Taiwan vaccinations do vaccinate against the same things that Australia does, they use a different brand made by a different company. I do not know what the brand here is. In the Taiwan brand, the Hep B sequence is 0, 1, and 6 months. In the Australian brand, the sequence for Hep B is 0,2,4,6 months.

We have confirmed with a contact who is a Pediatrician, and he agrees that because we know what brand Australia uses (Infantrix Hexa), instead of getting the free Taiwan shot, we should just go private and request (and pay for) for the “Infantrix Hexa” shot.

Our records from our Doctor list exactly what injection is given including the brand. If your records do not indicate what brand of shots your child is getting I strongly recommend you find out, that way when you get to taiwan you can go to the hospital and say I want “xyz” brand on this date.

Regarding the anti-vaccination question, well I have read many web sites and corresponding research papers, and I have found very little in the way of evidence except that there may be a very slight association between vaccinations and Autisim. This does concern me however with so little research into the issue, there are other things that worry me more, such as living in a country where your child will be drinking the tap water that causes bowel cancer.

Sorry to contradict you, but there is actually a large amount of evidence that shows there is not a correlation between vaccines and autism. This is an area that has been heavily researched.

Thank you pqkdzrwt. We’ll make sure to get notes of everything so we can go the private route if needed.

Does anyone know of a way to get a list for Taiwan? Would be great so that we can take the shots here in Sweden at the right time.

Is there any legitimate research that shows the rate of autism is equal to or less in vaccinated children, preferably not paid for by the companies that make vaccinations! Would put my mind at ease somewhat. As far as I can tell there is none. Would love to be proven wrong here.

Well, to be fair, you stated that there was a correlation between vaccination and autism. I’d actually like to see the research that you’re drawing on to say that there is.

However, there have been a few a meta-analyses of studies that found no link. An example is here: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17928818
and the lay version here: idsociety.org/Content.aspx?id=13336

There is also the fact that in Japan, where MMR (one imagined cause of autism) was withdrawn many years ago, autism rates have continued to rise. And there is also the fact that since thimerosal (the other imagined cause of autism) was withdrawn in the US in 2000, autism rates have continued to rise.

I didn’t say research implied a correlation between MMR and autism, but that there appeared to be a correlation between vaccination in general and autism.

The Medical journal Lancet issued a full retraction on the autism/mmr study - on the grounds that it was 100% false!

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8493753.stm

Lancet accepts MMR study ‘false’

The correlation arises simply because autism tends to be diagnosed at the same time that children receive vaccinations. The increased rates of ‘autism’ have several possible underlying causes, not the least of which is that autism reporting rates are rising following better education, increased publicity, and the recent inclusion of a broader spectrum of near-autism conditions under the same umbrella.

Unfortunately, this false study has led to a vigorous “anti-vaxer” movement, which in turn has led to childhood diseases that were exceedingly rare for decades to once again become commonplace. Many children have died unnecessary deaths as a result.

Vaccinate your kids, please.

I didn’t say you did. I said MMR was one imagined cause of autism. Do you know of any research that indicates a link between the two? I am sorry to get on your case about it but it’s a dangerous, pervasive urban myth and it concerns me when I read it stated on forums as though there is some possibility there. I’ve read lots of comments from otherwise well-informed people along the lines that the jury is still out or that expert opinion is divided. This is simply untrue, and I think that a lot of people are failing to vaccinate their children, putting them and others at risk due to irresponsible scaremongers (not yourself).

I spent about an hour searching the pubmed website for actual published research on the matter and was not able to find much, I remember finding one paper that suggested that their research found their “could” be a link. It’s conclusion was further research is required. I am not sure I would be able to find it again.
