office pc on the blink, need to re-format, anyone know how to back-up microsoft outlook so all my files of emails (1000s and 1000s) can be re-installed into the reformatted model ??? :help:
search for PST files copy them and after the install is just import them again
sorry to be dim…whats a PST file? i’ve located the outlook pst file but are you saying all i need is to back this up?
yepp, backup all the files from that folder thats all
There is an “export” function in MS Outlook. That will create a backup *.pst file for what you want to “backup”. Then make sure you save that *.pst file somewhere off the harddrive so that you can then “import” that *.pst file back to the now, newly rebuilt PC.
From what you said here, it looks like your *.pst file is going to be HUGE. That means that you will need to burn the *.pst file to a CD or copy to a portable HD (it will be too big for a flash drive unless your flash drive is 512Mb or bigger).
Good luck.
that sounds about right isieh. the pst file poncho is talking about is only 1.8MB large so couldnt possibly contain all the emails i need to back up. can you give me a clue as to where to find the export function? my pc is chinese version. i can read conversational chinese ok but its a bit tricky when its tech related.

Alt+F - Opens the File Menu
E - Chooses “Export”
M - Chooses “Messages”
change the M into a “A” to export your address book, maybe that’s what you exported before ?
No one sends me email (sniff ), so I haven’t got my email set up, so I don’t know if this works.
Bear
From what you are saying it sounds like you have more than one .PST file.
From within the folder browser in Outlook, do you have mor ethan one personal folder, or folder saying mailbox. If so right click on each, then take the properties option. Click on advanced, this should then show where the file is located for that personal folder or mailbox, and therefore the locations you need to backup.
Hey bear,
Tell me what OS and Office version you’re using. I am assuming you’re using English Win 2K with MS Office 2000 Traditional Chinese. I need to know your set up before I can answer your question correctly.
Thanks,
affirmative…windows 2K, trad chinese office
