When I first start to download Azureus, it ask me which Mirror I want to use. It lists a whole load of countries. What the heck is a mirror? I chose Taiwan. What difference does it make?
A bit further on, the configuration wizard asks me to ‘Select Incoming TCP Port’. I went with the default number (not having a cluewhat a port is) but when it ‘tested it’ it came up with ‘NAT failed’. It thought wizards were supposed to help people like me through this jungle? What the hell is a NAT?..Ah, who cares…what number should I try next?
Didn’t get any further with the configuration wizard so who knows what else is in store for me.:taz:
A mirror is a copy of the website. You’re just choosing where to download the program from. Using one close to you might make the download faster. Or it might not, if the one you choose is just a crappy server
A port is just a number. It’s used by the network to figure out which connections belong to which programs. It doesn’t matter which number you use, except …
NAT stands for Network Address Translation. It’s a little tricky. You have your computer, and then often you have a switch or a router connected to it. Your internet traffic goes through that router and out into the big wide world.
But when a connection comes in from outside, and hits the router, the router needs to figure out which computer to send it to. That’s where NAT comes in. You tell the router “if the connection is on port 22, send it to computer X. If it’s on any port between 2000 and 4909, send it to computer Y”. And so on. That’s NAT.
So Azureus is asking you which port it can tell other computers about, so that they can make connections which get through your router to the right computer.
If you have a router, you’ll need to do some setup. If you don’t, any port number should work. But, if you (your computer or your router) run firewall software (and most Windows computers do by default), you need to make sure that the firewall allows incoming connections on that port. There’ll be a setting … somewhere.

Any advice much appreciated.[/quote]
I couldn’t solve the problem at my office regarding the NAT either but it still works with the default settings after running the wizard, just ignore the failed test.
No issue related to the NAT when using the ADSL at my house, with the same settings. Give it a try.
Bit Torrent will work fine even if your port is firewalled, but it means that you can only connect to other non-firewalled clients, and nobody will be able to connect to you. What this all boils down to is that your bit torrent downloads will be slower with a firewalled port. How much slower depends on the particular download you are trying.
If you have a fairly modern router for your internet connection then it probably supports UPnP. You can tell Azureus to use UPnP to tell the router to open up a port for you automatically. If your router doesn’t support UPnP then you’ll have to find out how to set your router manually to do port forwarding. The best thing to do is find out the model number of your router and then google the model number and ‘port forwarding’.
