Tom here, (wish I hadnt made a noise about leaving)
Gonna arrive in Bangkok on Sunday night. How can I get from the airport to downtown without taking a taxi? I did it once and got totally ripped off.

You can take the airport buses, which are to the left of the taxi stand when you leave the airport. A1, A2 and A3 (there may be an A4). They have set routes to different parts of Bangkok and are convenient and cost 100 baht.
Did you take a taxi from the taxi stand outside the terminal, or from one of the hucksters waiting in the terminal outside customs? I didn’t have any problems with the taxi stand taxis. Just make sure they have a “Taxi-Meter” and be sure the driver turns the meter on.
A reply in 6 mins. Now that is impressive. Thank you Chris.
When you exit at Bangkok airport people will approach you offering taxi services. They are really hire cars or limos and cost considerably more than meter taxis.
go outside to the taxi rank and take a meter taxi, or “taxi meter” as they call them. There is a 50 baht airport surcharge plus whatever is on the meter. You may need to be insistent with the driver about using the meter. If he refuses just get out and take another taxi. it should cost around 250-300 baht to get downtown. You need to pay the toll on the expressway, although if you arrive late at night or early in the morning it is not necessary to use it.
