🇨🇳 China - Beijing-Taipei high speed train

Train links from Fuzhou? This is ironic considering how mediocre the public transport is in Fuzhou and Xiamen. The public busses don’t even have AC in 30c+ heat.

Fujian is very much the forgotten province

Sure. Let’s make it 1 way. All those CCP ass kissers in Taiwan go lick their emperor’s balls in lightning speed.

very, very different situation.

There is first a land connection. The TW strait is still a very good defence against a country which does not have yet the amphibious capabilities to deploy an invasion force.

Second HK, since they built the water pipe bringing most of the water for Kowloon and NT from the Mainland, is totally dependent on China for water resources.

Third, CLP built and manages together with a Chinese partner a nuclear power plant in Guangdong, so most of Kowloon and NT gets energy from there (HK island and Lamma instead from HK Electric plant on Lamma, and HK Island gets most of its water from the reservoirs on the island).

Lastly, but not the least, the land lease of the NT. It was with an expiration date, the expiration came, the UK was not anymore in the strength position to bargain much more, They had to give up even the lands which were given in perpetuity (HK island and Kowloon proper up to Boundary street), even if HK Island (if kept with Lamma) could have been somewhat self reliant for energy and water (food is 99% imported anyways).

Therefore, the situation is so much different, TW is already independent for its water and energy needs from China, and in particular has domestic food production which can accomodate a huge chunk of the basic populace needs. Also, I am not aware of any treaty reaching expiration with China which would revert sovereignty back to China from another country.

That’s because there is no such treaty—other than China giving up Taiwan and Penghu in perpetuity in 1895. As we know, Kinmen and Matsu are separate cases as they were not part of this treaty process.

In any case, it’s quite sobering to look back to those HK negotiations and to see the British side trying to follow some semblance of a rules based transfer. Beijing has made it clear it simply does not care about agreements or international law. Anyone who thinks otherwise in 2022 is a fool.

indeed, well said.

Kinmen and Matsu indeed are TW second province  WE STILL HAVE SOME FUJIAN!

Over 70% of the water in Kinmen is from Fujian…

Granted, several nuclear missile silos placed in Hong Kong that go off in the event of an invasion would be quite the deterrent. Then people would scream oh no! Britain’s breaking the agreement! But at this point, since the Chinese People’s Republic has not honoured any of their agreements. Does it matter? Hindsight is 20/10.

well, that’s the whole point. The 80s were the moment of China opening up, showing their “best” face to the world (Tiananmen still had to happen when Thatcher started the talks, which were already been going for a long time with low intensity).

The mood was that China would eventually open up completely and be more amicable and similar to the West. The untapped Chinese market and cheap labour were too enticing for West. At that time, with that mood and greed, it was impossible to do otherwise. The UK already saved the imperial face with the Falklands, they couldn’t do it anymore with HK (too costly).

Anyways, never trust the reds is my mantra haha. (or the fierce nationalists in general).

Better dead than red.

Kinmen, yeah. Then? Kinmen is untenable tbh in the event of an invasion, but Chinar couldn’t even get to actually reunify them to the Mainland (I would use Mainland and reunify term for the portion of Fujian Province still under ROC government control, since they were actually Chinese and always have been).
