Being "neighbourly"

This can’t be entirely true I think. My coworkers are always bringing gifts to the office. If I had regifted everytime I was given something I’d be broke but they just keep giving me things. It’s really kind of them. So I think it’s just like anywhere some people are more petty and selfish than others. Some are really sweet and nice. I also think the negative experiences tend to stand out more in our memories.

Apologies for the long quote, but this is some of the best stuff I have read on here in a long while. You my good Sir are well adapted!

If it’s a place where you take out your own trash the etiquette is to smile and say hello during these building or street gatherings. There’s even music. And if you’re drinking you can throw your empty’s in the recycling truck at the same time.

They don’t let poor subhuman renters join those committees. Besides they sound like a nightmare half the time.

Having spent some time back in the old country recently even my wife said that people in general , no matter where they were from, were far more outgoing and easier to make friends with than over here. She generally makes friends much faster than me but still even she was quite surprised. Although the big city where I am from has degraded a bit with many temporary migrants and social issues , but still people outside the city centre have a lot more time to chat. This includes every kind of people, immigrants, locals, pensioners, professionals, even teens when they are trying to mug you (jk).

Many Taiwanese (not all), especially younger to middle aged, are really really really poor at talking to ‘new’ people or people outside their group. Act really awkward.
You really have to work hard at it UNLESS they want something from you like money or maybe some language learning etc. And when I mean talking I mean talking beyond ‘where you from’, ‘your Chinese is really good’ or ‘how much is that’.

I live in the countryside, so maybe it is different than the big cities. I am on very good foot with my neighbor on the left. But the neighbor on the right is an issue. Neighbor To The Left will weekly dole out veggies, eggs and share whatnot. We will always reciprocate. Neighbors To Right are Osho-loving sanyasins who will dance around bonfires and meditate. According to them, we don’t have ‘good energy’ and they ignore us. We will also reciprocate.

A lot of the people living in my building key in my floor when they are first to enter the lift. So I try to memorize them all and return the gesture but of course I got it wrong several times… Obviously it is far more easy for them to remember mine…
The majority are friendly saying “bye bye” when exiting the lift. In retrospect I think I started doing this but now it is also part of their routine…
There are still 2 who freeze completely and their body language clearly tell me that they absolutely do not want any kind of interaction with anyone else…

My experiences have been much the same. I lived in a gong yu before, so i only had 2 sets of neighbours to interact with. One friendly old couple, another some snotty young people who looked at me like I was a ghost / dog shit.

My current building feels like there are 100 people in it. I was trying to be friendly when i first got here but quickly cottoned on that people don’t want to be bothered. Still, a fair number of them are pretty friendly and some chat with me. One time an extremely hot woman got in the lift, and to my surprise initiated a polite greeting, caught me right off guard and I didn’t have a reply… if only she turned up more than once!

I have no idea what this means, even after trying to look it up. Can someone explain please.

Believers of Hinduism who worship Osho, the Indian mystic.

At you sure your neighbor is even occupied? I heard many buildings are vacant in Taipei due to shit rental yields and people buying houses for investment.

Osho is an Indian mystic / guru, his followers are called sanyasins (I can be wrong and not sure about the spelling). Have a look at the documentary on Netflix, Wild wild country to learn more about their sex frenzied meditations…

I don’t know why all the obsession with indian gurus. Most indians I have met are so conservative and sex adverse, Amish look like hippies in comparison.

Lived in old walk up building with ten units. Usually only saw the old people coming back from food shopping…helped one carry her food upstairs several times.
Normally only two events got people talking.
1)when something broke or needed cleaning/fixing. One guy did the grunt work of finding a vendor and getting everyone to pay their portion. For example, the water tower was cleaned once per year. The water pump was replaced once. Was an old place but at least felt could have some level of cooperation to keep the place livable.
2)water leaks.
Being on top floor we had water leaks from roof. Eventually when fixed the problem the water simply moved over to another apartment. So that neighbor came to ask what we did to the roof. We did not touch any of her area so not much she could say. Other floors also had leaks as well. That would cause some interaction to see what was happening in other apartments.

OK this is too much information!

Sounds like something you want to see, but then you spend the rest of your life wishing you hadn’t.

Yea, Indians are like the most sex adverse people I’ve ever known. The women wouldn’t take off their clothing for ANY reason, not even shower!

Its part of their culture. Make sense to them . Outside of india, it would be seen as absurd

Actually it’s a product of British colonialism that never left from what I understand

British colonialism never left there for sure but that pretty normal with many countries who were colonized and got independent not long ago. Like japanese culture is quite liked in taiwan . Same in india, british culture is prevailent and influenced lot of things there but the clothing part isnt related to it. Its mostly related to religion and idea of preserving traditional values.
