My 2-year contract with Chinese Telecom DSL (Hinet) is up. Tailit used to have a page comparing current DSL offerings from several outlets but it hasn’t been updated in a while. Do all DSL providers still use Chinese Telecom’s backbone?
What’s the best way to sign up? I did the n00b thing and walked into a Chinese Telecom office and walked out with a 2 year contract for 2.5M down / .5M up ADSL paying way too much. Would I get a better deal through a reseller like through a 3C store?
So-net currently has a deal for 20M down / 2M up for $618 a month, or $7,050 if I pay for a whole year in advance.
If any of you are with So-net, how is it like? Do they give you special perks like with hosting or extra email addresses?
Also, how is FTTB different from ADSL? Any reason to prefer one over the other?

When I moved, I signed up for So-net 10M FTTB account (not that deal, damn that’s cheap). I used to have Zhonghua ADSL. In terms of general web-browsing, no noticeable difference. Youtube seems more consistent with So-net. In terms of torrenting, though, I find So-net to be weirdly inconsistent: damn fast in the early morning for a few hours, very slow in the afternoon, and literally nothing at night, but on occasion it’ll hit a really fast seed for some inexplicable reason. Overall, slower than my 8M Zhonghua ADSL connection. I can’t imagine the 20M being a huge difference over 10M, unless you’re downloading a lot of huge software updates directly over a local server. If I had to do it again, I’d probably get the Zhonghua FTTB.
I don’t use any of that other junk.

That So-net price doesn’t include the Zhonghua Telecom “circuit fee.” Does your So-net bill list it separately?

I agree 20M isn’t going to make a discernible difference surfing the web or streaming online content, and I would probably get the 10M since the upload rate is the same. Not too concerned about BT, since I usually start downloading a torrent right before going to sleep and watch it when I get home the next day. Maybe turning on “encryption only” in your client’s setting would help get around their traffic-shaping. I only download from officially-sanctioned trackers and encourage everyone to do the same.

yes all providers use HINET’s backbone. The FTTB 10mb 2mb seems to work very well all the time for the people that I know use it from Hinet. It’s also pretty cheap.
One that lets the MPAA FACT and many other companies that chase after pirates who download and upload stolen TV and music to others filesharing systems track the IP addresses and account users. Most governments have really never bothered to crack down on this as the broadband supliers are not their to monitor what content people download.

Follow up…who in the world would use such a thing?
That’s just not true, none of my past two providers have used hinet as their backbone. My previous provider used seednet and my current provider is using TFN which is part of Taiwan Mobile. Nothing goes via HINET in or out of Taiwan, so no, not all providers use HINET’s backbone…
If you’re talking about the backhaul from the exchange, then it’s a different matter though, since afaik only CHT has xDSL infrastructure in place.
