What are everyone’s favorite coffee shops in Taipei? Or can you suggest anyplace that boasts both good scenery and friendly employees?
And while we’re at it, what libraries serve the best coffee?
It was all the rage back in 99, and I dont know if they still have these cafes, but back then there were lots of cafes where you basically paid by the minute (it came out to be bout 60nt/hour) and you got well lighted cubicles with nice sofas to sit on and read. They had all the latest magazines and plenty of books for you to choose from to read. And of course you can bring your own literature. They also provided at no extra charge soft drinks , coffee and tea (as much as you can drink on self serve basis). There was a really nice one on Chongshiao / tunhwa very near to Luxy. It was on the second floor and quite large. That was a nice place, wonder if its still there and still good?
I thought it was a marvelous idea. Pay by the minute for the time you spend there. Plenty of material to read in a comfortable surrounding and all you can drink coffee/tea/soft drinks. Occasionally they even had cake to eat and popcorn as well.
Open 24/7 and apparently the idea came from Japan.

The place mentioned above is still at Zhong Xiao and Dun Hwa but on the top floor. Starbucks can be a good place to study if you go at the right time. Sometimes too many people and music is loud. Mornings and other times on weekday are good. Weekends tend to have lots of people and very noisy.
Not to familiar with Taipei–Zhongxiao and Dunhua… so it’s essentially right next to the Zhongxiao Dunhua MRT stop? Feeling a bit dumb right now, spare me.

In the Nanyang Street area there are a number of “K書中心”, study centers where you rent a quiet cubicle or a room to study in. Open 24 hours. No idea about tea service, though.
Ya , the place i went to was really very well run and they give you this card that you use to sign in and sign out of the place and they charged you by the minute you were physically there. It was one nt/minute at that time. I thought novel idea. Charge by the time you are in a place ! And all you can drink soda and coffee and tea. Nice place, clean and with many many magazines, etc to read. They even had cd players and a lot of music for you to listen to.
I went to one down in Tainan and they had a few internet kiosks then too.
IF in the area check it out. May be they kept it nice (hopefully).
Its on the same side of the street as Luxy and not far from the corner of dunhwa/chongshiao.
If you’re cheap libraries are a great place to study. As for coffee shops if you bring a laptop and sit in a Starbucks without ordering a drink I am sure they won’t bug you (if they do say you’re using WiFly or something cause you ARE paying for that…)

Just the same it would be nice to order at least something cheap? There was this cute little girl at one last time i was at the one on chongshiao/dunhwa, who looked like she had been there for hours already, had her pocket dog with her and her netbook. Guess that was pretty typical.
I wonder if starbucks still makes money with all those people staying there for hours? That doesnt happen at US starbucks.
i also vote for starbucks. there’s also lavazza and all the local coffee shop chains (the names all escape me at the moment- just look for starbucks-ish logos with a twist.)
if you’re looking for free wi-fi, i know of 2. My Sweetie Pie (which has an array of american style desserts) in Shida and LA Cafe (in Vieshow in Xinyi district), which is great to bring your laptop to surf and study.
