Best ISP in Taiwan

We are moving and I’m considering whether to keep hinet adsl or switch to another provider. What are the choices these days? Are they all about the same price and quality?

I like Seednet because they have awesome customer service if you have a problem.

Also a dedicated customer service line.

HINET,

My ADSL zooms and they have English customer service.

GIGA is great too

broadband in taiwan has improved drastically in the year i’ve been here.

I went with Hinet because all of the other carries have to run on their lines somewhere anyway. How could anyone be faster?

Speed isn’t everything though, since I’m tech savy enough, I don’t care much for customer service (which is something you may want to consider).

I haven’t checked the prices much recently but different deals are always going on. I know I’d stick with hinet, my ping times are always under 100 when playing counter-strike and when downloading I often times get speeds of over 200kb per sec.

My ping times are always between 100 and 200. Do I have a problem that Hinet can solve ?

My ping times are terrible on hinet in Taichung.

Your performance has a lot to do with your local loop, how much gear (fiber, servers, etc.) the area has hooked up, and how many people in your area (local and city) are playing CounterStrike at any given time.

I only wish I could get miltownkid’s performance. Also, Hinet’s DNS servers are pure shite, they are the main cause of the constant failed page loads I get all the time. I am just about at the point of looking for a open server to use instead of Hinet.

What speeds do you guys have? I don’t want to say how much I pay  , but I do know that I got the fastest service availible (counter-strike was one of the reasons for choosing).

Got got the 1.5 down and…512 up? I can’t remember, who cares about the up… Wait, maybe the up has something to do with counter-strike ping times… I don’t know :?

I do know that I was playing on a server localed in Tainan today and was still under 100. With DSL if you’re not getting the speeds you’re paying for you can call and complain. You are paying for a garunteed speed (unless you have one of the cheaper services). That’s why I wouldn’t sign up for cable here. With cable, tech support can always give you a BS answer like “there must be a lot of people online” or something if things are slow. With DSL, you have the power to call, yell (scream, curse) and tell them to give you refunds. It’s very fun  .

Yeah but I’m getting very near the bandwidth I pay for (1536/64), but the pings are terrible.

Must be the upstream. Without searching all day long, this is the best article I could find.

dansdata.com/bandwidth.htm

I think that’s it. The trip from your computer is probably the weak link. I believe he skipped a step too. There should be a line that reads “how long the your computer takes to think about it”, but that’s probably not a problem in your case.

guys:

ping is complex, depending on which target are you “pinging”
if you ping a local server, ie: dns.hinet.net you should get
around 50 to 60ms roundtrip, but if you ping something out
of Hinet backbone then you could get > 100ms

if you are linux fan, you can setup your own dns server to
bypass hinet one :sunglasses:

setting proxy server also helps: proxy.hinet.net:80

cheers,

There are different options for broadband connections to the last mile.

Most common are Cable and DSL. If you have cable, you are sharing a pipe with your neighborhood. So the more people in your neighborhood using the cable top access the internet at the same time, the higher your ping, latency will be and your performance degrades.

DSL is suppose to be better in that you have a some what assumed dedicated pipe. But who knows exactly what really goes on in the backoffice of these ISPs. They are in the business, so the more people they can squeeze in on the same pipe the better for them.

But if you’re not willing to pay for a dedicated line (i.e. T1), you will have to live with the high ping and latency during prime internet time (when everyone comes home from work or school and start playing CS or surfing porn).

Households may have more than one computer sharing the same broadband connection. This will effect your performance as well, as your bro is playing games over the internet and your sis chatting away. And if you have a peer to peer software on your machine (ie. Kazaa) the downloading of porn will eat up alot of your bandwidth. So, to improve your internet experience, make sure no one else in your household is using there computers (unplug them from the hub) and turn off your porn downloader. Now you have CS all to yourself with low ping.
