I’m going to fly to Taiwan to search for a teaching job (most likely at a buxiban). I want to fly there ASAP while I still have enough money to live on while I’m there job searching. I’ve heard that the “main” hiring period is June - August. I really want to fly over there some time late May at the latest, though. I figure it will be better to get there a little early in the hopes that I can land a decent job while there are many still available.
I already have 2 years of teaching experience in Korea, so I’m hoping that will land me a decent job quicker than having had no experience. Also, my BA degree is in English.
I know buxibans supposedly hire year-round, so I’m not really sure just how important it is when exactly I get there.
My main concern is that if I get there too early, there will be no decent jobs available yet and that my 60-day visa will expire before I have time to go thru the process of obtaining an ARC once I finally do land a job. On the other hand, I don’t want to wait too long and find out that many of the jobs have already been filled, while also having less money to live on.
Is late May too early to go, or should I wait until June sometime?

Appreciate any advice.[/quote]
IMHO, anytime is fine. It’s where you wanna live in Taiwan which should be more important than the job itself.
Well I’m planning on flying to Taipei and staying in a hostel there while I try to find a job in that city. I would expect that it would maybe be more difficult to find a decent job right away in Taipei because it’s the main city and so most people will be vying for jobs there. Is it much more more difficult to land a job in Taipei than in smaller cities? How long roughly would you estimate it would take for me to land a job in Taipei if I get there late May?
I suppose I would accept a job in Kaohsiung as well. That would be my second choice. Would it be much quicker to land a job there as opposed to Taipei, and would it be worth it do you think?
Also, is it necessary to bring a criminal background check with me when I go there. Many people have told me it’s not necessary in Taiwan. However, know it’s very necessary in Korea. So I’m thinking I should just get that done and bring it anyway just in case?
Lastly, is it much preferable to obtain a visitor visa ahead of time thru the Taiwanese Embassy in the US prior to flying to Taiwan? I know that will provide me with 60 days rather than 30, but I don’t know if it’s worth it or necessary since I’m going to have to fly to Hong Kong to change over to an ARC once I land a job anyway. It all depends on how long it will take me to get a job which is a complete unknown right now.

Dunno about the boondocks but Taipei shouldn’t be that difficult. If you bust your chops, I’d say less than a month to find a decent gig.
Dunno…not familiar with Kaohsiung (I’m a Northerner ).
Unless you’re a serial rapist/killer or have ties to Al Qaeda, I’d say don’t worry about it (or should I? ).

That’s an excellent Q. I’d play it safe and go with 60 days but you have to look at the ROI on that.
