Best value waterproof camera?

I’d like to buy a waterproof camera, but the last one I bought takes boring, crappy pictures. My budget is 12,000NT, but I could go a bit higher if I absolutely had to.

Can anyone give me some advice on this?

Thanks in advance.

I’m trying to decide which to get from Nikon Coolpix AW100 (s?), Canon Powershot D10 and Olympus Tough TG-810, all come to a maximum of 12000 including delivery if you buy them from the UK, I still need to get to some shop here and find out how much they cost here and see what they are actually like physically. If you get there before me let me know your impressions and the prices you find.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy the Sony. Oh, yes, the images are lovely, but what a POC the machine is! Service is good… for fixing and exchanging it twice! And no cigar…

I didn’t mention a Sony, the last one I royally broke was a sony. Got quoted more than I paid for the camera to fix it.

Nope, neither did the OP, he left all options open. Just in case he or you got a sales clerk who tried to stir him in that direction…

The Olympus Tough series are very good. That is where I would put the money (as long as you don’t mind the Yakuza).

My last one was an Olympus, but about 4 years old. The lens angle is quite narrow, so it is hard to get a nice “vista” shot. And the colors are boring -no zip. Are the more recent ones better, IYO?

I think the Canon is takes the best pics and is pretty durable, but it’s a BIG mofo. I’m more partial to the Pentax W80.

Which one did you have? I had a couple of the early mju’s, I liked the colours. As for the lens angle, yea but, not too bad.

The 790 SW

I went to the digital plaza at zhongxiao xinxeng however you write that and the camera street between main station and ximen and everything was more expensive that buying from the UK and paying for postage. Bit crazy. The only one that sort of matched the UK price was the Olympus Tough TG810 at 8800 NTD but this is without waranty or memory card, was quoted another 400NTD for an 8G card or 600NTD for a 16G card and 500NT for another battery. If you want more info send me your email and I’ll send you a photo of the shop card its all in Chinese.
I must admit having seen the Pentax WG-1 it seems much cooler than the other ones I saw, nice shape easier to hold during sport/in cold/wet weather. I got quoted 9900 without GPS or 12990 with GPS for this model with a weird cleaning set and 8g card, 12 month warranty from a place called fonhua digital or something. Again I’ve got a chinese card I can send details if you want.
The best price I found for the Nikon AW100 was 12600 with an extra battery 16Gb card. The canon was also 12690.

I’m between the Olympus and the Pentax, the olympus seems tough as hell but the batteries always suck for olympus, I haven’t really heard much about the pentax.

Anyone know if cameras are cheaper in thailand?

Pretty much going to get the same from the Olympus Tough…

I know one person who got a Pentax, they were happy but, I don’t think they have any high hopes or ambition of the camera doing too much. But I think compacts are just for fun anyhows. Still would go for the Tough because umm, tough!

Well, is there some kind of camera that is less rugged than a waterproof / shockproof one but won’t get screwed up by a wee bit of rain or sweat?

Yeah, sony cybershot lasted quite a lot of abuse but when i killed it… it was royally killed and you don’t know when that will happen. If you running with it get a toughy.

Olympus tough would get my vote - never had a problem with batteries for any Olympus.
I have an E-5 at the moment and in the first week I tripped over and slammed the camera into the road, leaving a mark on…the tarmac. The camera still works perfectly. The Olympus Tough will be much stronger than the E-5. The only thing I don’t like about the Tough is the video capture.

Actually I got convinced to get the Nikon AW100 in the end. 10900 in the digital plaza if you only want taiwan insurance. If I’m really bored you may get the chance to see it on Friday.

@Big John
I found this article very helpful Top 10 Waterproof cameras and accessories based on their overall value, picture quality and durability.

Myself I am using Casio Exilim EX-G1 12.1 MP slim-line endurance digital camera with 3x optical zoom! Very cheap and durable! I got this camera as a Christmas gift and now using it for 90% of my shooting.

Also for your information, a couple of weeks ago FujiFilm released a new waterproof camera at CES that looks very promising. It has a quick-start mode for easier use while in the water, and GPS location tagging on photos. Check it here gearbundles.com/camera/Fujif … ePix-XP150"

i like the Panasonic Limux - nice wide angle lens

Yeah, that is nice.

I am just an average user (no idea about photography), and I bought the Panasonic Lumix TS3 based on this review:

Might be slightly more expensive than NT$12,000 in Taiwan. I got mine from for US$279 from Amazon, and searching now they are roughly US$240 on Amazon.

You could also considered getting the older model because its cheaper at US$150. I have no clue the difference in quality though.
