Best Web Sites for Finding Teaching Jobs in Taiwan

Hi,
I am planning on moving to Taiwan later this year, and I need some advice on where to look for job postings. I am familiar with tealit and eslcafe, but what other sites have good lists of job openings?

Also, I have looked at www.104.com.tw as well as 1111.com.tw, but they are all in Chinese so I can’t really use them. Does anyone have any advice for using those sites?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I found my last job through 1111. Pay a Taiwanese friend in free beer to help you post your resume in the relevant area if you don’t read Chinese.

Why do so many Taiwanese websites use a series of numbers instead of something meaningful as a name?

“Go to 23432532545235234214234324.com.tw!” Uh, yeah… will do.

Sorry, I know this doesn’t contribute to the discussion, but Taiwanese people never give me much of an answer to this question.

ugh… quote isn’t edit.

A few reasons I can think of:

  1. Most site URLs are still in English (which is foreign to them), so numbers are actually easier to remember than foreign meaningless words.
  2. Most users don’t actually type in the URL. They search for the subject matter on Google and click on the result - so the actual URL can be anything.
  3. Some numbers actually do have meanings. 5 sounds similar to the word for “I”. 1 can mean “want”. 7 can mean “eat” etc. So a string of meaningless numbers to you, can actually represent a full sentence that is easy to remember for them.

tealit is my favorite and it has more jobs posted than these others but, here are some other options

seriousteachers.com
worldoftefl.com

If you have a facebook account and know where you may end up, there are area specific teachers groups. I’m aware of Ilan teachers, Taichung teachers and Hsinchu teachers which all have listings from time to time. There will be more of these groups.

I can tell you the best website to go to where you will get a job much quicker than all the others - guaranteed :sunglasses:

Its called www.gotoeachschoolinperson.com

Then at the top menu option click on “walk round the area for the many buxibans that operate there”

Welcome to Taiwan!

I hope that you can speak Mandarin if you do that. You may just wind up and the office staff don’t speak English. There are definitly a lot of schools if you get outside of downtown Taipei, with office staff that don’t speak much English.

May I say… It’s a bad suggestion!

First of all, I just told my employer that I want a 100 NT$/hour salary increase. How is this going to turn out with a bunch of desperate newcomers standing right next to me?
It is a waste of energy also since these places are not looking for teachers. It will only put you in a bad position for negotiating your pay.
I have been here since 1997 and never, I mean never went into any place asking for a job.

If? I did do that… every single one there was at least one person who spoke english. I’m talking about buxibans here…remember.

Lets see of the many many applications i emailed/applied for online, i would say i received much much higher success rate with going round the buxibans in person.

But hey OP try applying online, maybe it will work for you

The newcomers wouldn’t be standing next to you…unless your desk space is right next to the door?

Also you act like there are droves of foreigners all queuing up at the buxibans…not the case at all. It is better to go in person because a) The taiwanese employer will get to meet/assess you, including your spoken english. b) You make more of an impression in person than you do emailing a resume c) I got offers to sub at places i left my resume, a stronger connection is made imo.

But hey, apply for jobs where everyone else is applying…totally relying on places like tealit etc. You are competing with guys who have been here for ages, have more experience, know chinese etc… good luck

Metaphor!
Or, a metaphor describing a metaphor?
Too complicated!

You are competing with the teachers who already occupy the position you wish to take. Good luck with that. Even if they make you some space, where is the catch? You’ll probably find out when you are tired, overworked and the next newcomer walks through the door.

Yeah! I have seen that before. Half of those people had better stayed with Photoshop and the standard resume.

Anyhow, it turned out to be a 50NT$ raise. You figure.
