Money is a form of power. But it’s not the only form, and it can’t do everything. This is something rich, corrupt and cynical people don’t seem to grasp.
There was a time when people hollered about getting big money out of politics. John McCain rode that bandwagon into the sunset. Then came Citizens United and they howled all the louder. The hysteria approached global warming proportions.
Well, Jeb Bush is not doing so well. The Donald, on the other hand, is doing exceedingly well with another kind of money entirely. Still, I’m not sure Marc Rich’s money can buy Bubbette the nomination, let alone the presidency.
But let’s look at the other way money influences politics - by influencing ideology. Oh, let’s not mince words. By indoctrinating. Brainwashing. Eddie Bernays showed us how to do it, but then the market invented sales resistance. Keep that in mind as you ponder:
Within five days, three news media outlets — the left-leaning HuffPost Live and New Republic, and the Qatar-funded Al Jazeera America — have all publicly announced that they’re either up for sale or closing down.
The failures came even though all three were believed to have been backed by a seemingly endless stream of funding that would see them into a future where they could become profitable.
George Soros is not God after all. Perhaps there never was a future where they would be profitable.
