I’ll be spending a weekend in a hotel in the Situn district of Taizhong. Could anyone tell me if there are bike paths or bike rentals available? Short of that, I’d also be open to a good place for running or hiking which is accessible from that part of town.

You can easily rent proper bikes from Giant bike shops. The main one in Xitun would be…(main one has just closed down) - google maps might help.
There aren’t many proper bike paths but there is one really nice one that goes from the industrial estate (nr. Xitun) to fengyuan (you’d want to come back again).
Otherwise practice running (on road) up and down Dadu “mountain”, around the track/campus at the University and around the Metropolitan park (where you can also rent fun bikes).

I haven’t paid for a rented bike from Giant for a year or more (hired some to ride Snow Mountain). They have lent me a few while my bike was being serviced, etc.
I haven’t ever rented a bike from the peeps up on the Metro Park.
You shouldn’t have any trouble renting. They also rent other stuff (kites, trikes,…)
