Hi,
I would like to know about the best route to take if I want to bike from Taichung to Kaohsiung. Also, has anyone done it? If so, how long does it take, and how much training do I need?

Contact Drew Kerslake at the Taiwan in Cycles blog as he has done it. There are several routes – the coast will be windy and longer, about 30K longer. Routes 1 and 19 are boring but more direct. Also crowded with traffic. Try using the Google direction finder and set it to the walking directions. I got a nice 205 km route that way.
I did it about twelve years ago, so traffic has probably changed a bit since then. I “hugged the hills” following some of the number 3 pretty much all the way down. Go ahead and get lost along the way, follow some of the smaller more “scenic” routes. You can probably get a good idea of the roads via google maps and choose the most interesting route.
