Bilingual banking in Taipei

E.Sun bank, Mega bank and DBS plan to offer English service in certain branches in Taipei (NTU campus, Tianmu). Might be helpful for some users here.

I always thought most banks for decades always plugged that they had English service at their branches? But of course the reality when you got there was you needed Mandarin.

Taiwanese banks don’t understand English signatures. If you have a messy signature that changes a little each time, you are screwed.

And I’ll say it again: they don’t even understand foreign names. If one document has your middle name, and another doesn’t, they tell you to  off. Why would anyone think a green dude with tentacles called y y is not the same as a green dude with tentacles called y y y who has the same DOB and everything? It’s not like y is a common name!

Especially frustrating is if the name on your ID doesn’t match the name on their records because their form doesn’t permit more than a dozen characters for a name.

My legal last name has twelve letters. My middle name isn’t present on my NHI card, which has brought up confusion at times
and because my last name is so long, it’s invariably cut off at clinics and hospitals, where they call it out as though it’s my first name. “Yeah, close enough, that’s me.”
Just waiting for my 10-yr passport to expire so I can change it, and my ARC, to my three-letter married name
