Well one of my Taiwanese roomies, we will call her Sarah, dated a girl in college. I asked her if she was a lesbian or bi-sexual and she got angry. I think she was experimenting, but it seemed like she was just trying to be cool. I don’t know I’d call a spade a spade.

I don’t mean to gross you out, but one theory - and this is a serious theory by anthropologists - is that kissing descends from the bird-like practice of the mother clasping her mouth upon her baby’s mouth and regurgitating food. Folks didn’t have that mushy supermarket babyfood back in the old days… Though no longer widely practiced (outside of some primitive societies), the pleasant memory of that motherly love became an ingrained habit in our psyche. Note how close the act of sharing tongues in a kiss is similar to the act you’d do if you slipped your lover a dollop of chocolate ice-cream off of your tongue and down her throat.

Seriously, people have always been doing things to try to shock others. It’s just that nowadays people have to go farther and farther. If we don’t pay too much attention to these acts (like the onlookers the students from meiguolangren’s school were trying to shock), I’m sure they’ll scratch their heads and then do something else to catch our attention, and heck knows what’s next.

I know quite a few bisexual Taiwanese girls through my boyfriend. I’m not sure whether they really are or not (although, personally I suspect that they just think it’s cool … I’ve never seen them actually kiss a girl or anything). It’s funny, though, that they have so many gay guy friends (they say 80% of their friends are gay guys), yet they get grossed out and 尷尬 when my boyfriend and I play tonsil hockey on their living room floor. :?
I guess younger people tend to do what’s cool. It’s now cool to be bi-sexual so you see alot of it. But if you pressed the issue they would say they are straight.

Yes this was in Taiwan and was taken recently, but I have no idea which school these kids are from and why they did this, but probably as a prank… not sure what the teacher said to the students or whether she even knew but I sure would like to hear what the principal said to the teacher after he/she saw this picture flying around on the internet.

Daniel, you say the girls probably did it “as a prank.” Maybe. Maybe they never did or will roll around naked with other girls in the future. But I don’t think it can be dismissed so lightly. Teenagers hormones tend to be high anyway, and many kids in Taiwan are probably sexually repressed, but I think for girls to kiss as in that photo, even if it was supposedly in jest, I think there must be some mutual feeling of sexual (or sensual) excitement between the two girls. They might deny it, but that’s my belief.
Miaka, why do two girls kissing turn on guys? I guess if the thought of one soft sensual set of lips, accompanied by neck, shoulders, breasts, stomach, hips, thighs and all the rest, in an aroused state is exciting, two sets is twice as exciting, particularly when they’re entwined together. Of course for most guys its just a fantasy-- they don’t actually see that very often (except maybe in movies) and maybe they imagine themselves sandwiched in the middle of the action. Kinsey, Masters & Johnson, and Hite studies on human sexuality all found female-to-female sexual activity to be one of the top ten fantasies for men and women while male-to-male sex has never been a top fantasy for either gender. Female-to-female sexual experimentation experiences are much more common than male-to-male experimentation as well. Male social bonding is less likely to become physically intimate in that respect.
Of course, just because it is very common among others, doesn’t mean you have to have the fantasy. It’s perfectly normal not to be turned on by women kissing . . . just as it’s not abnormal to be turned on by a couple hot babes locking lips.

However, what may in fact be a common fantasy may not be a common practice . . . and, sometimes common practice is still publicly viewed as abnormal (for instance, the number of folks who have oral sex is very high but a lot of folks still think of it as dirty or distateful).
For that age group, there would likely be repercussions of some sort, especially if the parents object to the image. Some folks might be shocked that they would even be aware of sexuality, but they are human and Taiwan does have the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Asia . . . so some instruction in responsiblity might be in order (instead of skipping the two sex chapters in their health class - one student told me his teacher stapled those pages together in everyone’s text book while another girl said her teacher actually removed the pages, ripping them out, from everyone’s book).
The likelihood of denial is probably high - especially for an age group like that . . . but that looks like a pretty real kiss - not one of those quickie pecks. The students may have also been inspired less by “bisexual chic” but by images of young lesbians as in Yee Chih-Yen’s BLUE GATE CROSSING (Lanse Da Men) outuk.com/cgi-bin/llgff/film … k_ref=1023 which was quite the big rage last year (young lesbian love in a high school - one of those odd tender sweet girl loves girl who loves boy who loves girl triangle films. Last year, in one of my courses at the university, we did a long unit on perceptions of homosexuality and education and one of the girls brought in the movie for discussion. Because of student interest, the unit lasted much longer than originally planned.
