No loss there; efforts at governing have been ineffectual. Will anyone notice?
Sorry for the lost of life, but the US can hand-pick another exile who has been out of the country for most of their adult lives to fill the slot.
I mean this individual is far from a linchpin, like GWB for example.

Are you saying that GWB is or isn’t a linchpin? Must be that comma…
Another one can also be blown up. The basic issue is the complete deterioration of security. Did you notice that the Italians withdrew after their attempt to occupy a local town? That’s two defeats and withdrawals, the Americans in Fallujah, and now the Italians in Nasirya. We’ve made a desert, and called it liberation.
Vorkosigan
that’s a bit callous innit? i’m sure the guys family and friends might see it differently…
A ny times article said about “Mr. Salim, a low-profile council member who held the rotating and largely ceremonial position of council president”: "Mr. Salim, a Shiite, was a writer, philosopher and political activist who served as editor of several newspapers and magazines, The Associated Press said. "
I feel sad for loss of life in any situation, yet I feel that the death of this man is significantly more of a loss than that of the suicide bomber who killed him. I admire the positive energy he put into his life, and feel he will be missed by many friends, family, and other Iraqis.
Iraqis should be choosing to pull together and build a free and positive society, not succumbing to the miserable destructiveness of some thugs who resort to murder and suicide bombings.
There is much more to say on this, but being an international politics novice, and not wanting to be savaged, I’ll focus for now on the needless death of this situation. His murder is such a waste.
thank you for the background eezee…i think it’s important that people realise every life is important; every death a tragedy… not just those of american soldiers, foreign workers etc (witness the virtual deification of pat tillman)…no one is expendable or should be written off as collateral damage (a despicable turn of phrase if ever there was one).
This really sucks. Who are we handing over the government too next month?
