I agree; although it seems like a fun little bell or whistle, it also seems like a distraction, which we have had too many of lately, and a burden on mods and admins. And I don’t think we should reward sheer numbers of posts. Besides, seeing karma ratings is useful info only for newbies who don’t know how to interpret someone; after a year or more here, most of us already know who’s cool and who’s not.
For anyone who is in the know: does Forumosa use a modified version of phpBB, or is it used exactly how it is released (other than cosmetic changes)?
I’m just curious and I don’t know anything about the particulars of phpBB.
…We spend time talking about guanxi, chops and flags rather than about living in Taiwan…
…I just imagine new people stumbling across the site and thinking “great a place where I can discuss life in Taiwan - wait a minute - they just seem to be talkign about somethign called ‘guanxi’ and arguing about why the ‘Star Chamber’ banned 'Comrade Stalin - forget it - this seems like a waste of time”.
Well, that’s what THIS forum is for – Feedback and Announcements is specifically about what is happening on this particular website. When threads start up about Forumosa in OTHER forums, we expect the moderators to move them here.
This is a very modified version of phpBB - not as heavily modified as it once was, but it is hacked to a large degree.
What Bu Lai En said and was quoted by Goose Egg was probably the reason I didn’t join years ago. I think I came and looked and kept posting on other boards.
I swallowed the racing car intentionally playing monopoly once and it wasn’t my counter.
I swallowed the top hat. Kind of by accident though, and it WAS my counter.

Did you feel proud after you passed your first racing car?
Did you eventually find your car in a bog?
"twasn’t mine. Twas one of my sisters. She never cheated using that counter ever again.
Because guanxi makes me feel important.
Angh!
Guanxi sounds like a waste of time but a classic post/thread forum would give us something to aspire to. It would be a lot of work digging through the archives for all of the past gems, and there would of course be the problem of deciding what constitutes a classic, but it sure seems as though a lot of inspired, witty posts are just fading away, sinking to the bottom, drifting off into the sunset…sniff* Wouldn’t it be great if newbies and old timers alike had a quick way to find the really good stuff?
What you describe here would be perfect for the Wiki
Thanks goose egg. I thought it might be best to infrom myself a tad before bugging you with dumb questions so I went snooping around up in Wiki. There I found a spot called “Classic thread” (under construction). Was that my idea?
I thought it was an excellent suggestion.
Yes it was your Idea but I don’t know how to make it a page link, so it’s under construction. Have to ask miltownkid yet.(anyone who do know, feel free to help)
It’s titled"Classic posts" btw. I think posts only is better although I can’t see why we couldn’t posts links to the classic threads we like.
Some individual posters should get their own classic posts thread

About a month ago, someone wiped out much of the content from the Kwiki. It’s also been spammed (Russian porn, if I recall correctly)
This has prompted me to build a new Wiki, based on MediaWiki - which has more security. Please have a look at wiki.forumosa.org
I’ve already added a “link” to a Classic Posts page.
If you are wondering about proper formatting (making links, bolds, section breaks) - click on the Help link on the left side
Folks, many thanks for helping build the Wiki.
I’ll look to change the Wiki links to the new MediaWiki shortly

I’ve written a “Classics Posts - Statement of Purpose” for the new page. I hope it meets with your approval, although I am sure it may need a tweek or two here or there. Thanks.
It occured to me that were the classics page to require moderators I would certainly consider it an honour to be a part of that team.

It’s sounds great bob! I wanted to write something but I was waiting for you to get your creativity working for us again. :bravo: :bravo: :bravo:
Just a note about the wiki and your kind offer to help:
If you would like to be a ForumosaWiki Sysop, to help us maintain the protected pages and drive content, please e-mail Maoman and Goose Egg at admin AT forumosa.org -
Bob for Classic posts mod! Why not? Sounds right to me.
I will add a post to that page this morning. Feel free to fix that one bob if something isn’t right. This is such a good Idea bob! I love it, the post I’m adding is in the flounders and I’m bringing it back to life! Yippie!
Thanks bobepine. That is a great quote you found and one that reminds me of how much wisdom and generosity there sometimes is here.
A Sysop is something like a moderator then yeah?
Wiki pages don’t need mods - half the point is that anyone can add to or edit them.
