British police to be taught Sharia Law

I don’t know what to make of this. I don’t have a grip on the situation in the UK, but I find this issue interesting, as it is a matter of time before North America will be facing the same situation.

Police will be trained on the importance of the Koran and Sharia law to Muslims under Government plans to tackle extremism.

Lessons in the Islamic faith and culture will become part of the formal training for recruits.

Chief constables said officers will build better relationships by understanding the communities they are policing.

This could prove crucial in rooting out extremism and preventing a terrorist attack, according to the Association of Chief Police Officers.

But critics expressed concern that the plan could foster division, rather than combat it.

It comes after the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, said the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK “seems unavoidable”.

He later said his remarks had been misinterpreted.

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis added: "Of course it is sensible for the police to have an understanding of the Koran and Sharia law as long as we do not allow the situation to slip so that Sharia law is regarded on an equal basis with British law.

The article is too long for me to post the whole thing, but I’d be really interested in opinions from a lot of people. I think more understanding is always a good thing, but…
I don’t like lending an air of legitimacy to Sharia Law
And, the more I understand about Islam, the more I don’t want to live in a place with Islamic rule, so I have my doubts that this course of study will give UK police a warm fuzzy feeling.

What are your thoughts?

I don’t think they should make allowances at all. If Muslims don’t like the idea of living in the U.K. then they shouldn’t. If you ask me then I believe that accepting Sharia Law, whatever it means, is just offering another reason for more Muslims to come and live in the U.K. and along with greater numbers will certainly come greater risk of extremism and a more difficult task of policing it. We have fewer and fewer police to cope with every day situations in the U.K. I don’t think society can afford the future of this endeavor.
