Budget for Cable TV/Internet in Taiwan?

Hi,

I would like to subscribe for cable TV/Internet including English TV chanels, sport chanels and TV5 (French TV chanel).

Most of information I found on the net is in Chinese and unfortunatly, I am still very crap in Chinese. :unamused:

What choices do I have ? what monthly budget should I expect to pay ? what installation fee should I expect to pay ?

Thanks,
Jerome.

Cable TV here is half the price and half the service.
Few set top boxes. You get what you get. Any color you want
as long as its black. No special channels, no HDTV. $20/month?

Some people install medium-large dishes pointed at a Phillipines satellite
and scam the Dream TV stations. I guess that’d include Spanish, English,
and Tagalog, not sure about French.

Internet here is half the price and at least double the speed. $20/month?

I pay 550NT a month for cable TV. I’m in Taichung but I imagine the price is pretty similar everywhere. I pay 300NT a month on top of that for cable internet, but this is the cheapest and slowest service they offer and I’m not even sure if they offer this service to new customers. I’d say expect to pay 300 - 800 a month depending on how fast you want the service to be. The service I have is fine for SKYPE and for internet radio – not so good for streaming video clips.

Installation should be around 1000NT I think.

I live in Yong He, I have broadband cable and the digital cable. Each month it will be $550. To set it up for a year, the lowest is 1M for $5000, plus first month $550, plus $72 for digital. But if you are in Taipei, dont bother with digital unless you want, the adult channels, and BBC and Star World and ABC and a couple of European stations. You can get the BBC and Star World on reg. cable.

That’s exactly what he’ll have to do if he want TV5.

dje76, will you be in Taipei?

Anyone got digital cable in Taipei?
What does it cost and what do you get?

I will be in Taipei and I guess I will subscribe for digital TV (in order to get French TV and sport channels)

Around $4,000 a year through Dong Sen.

HBO, STC, Starworld, MGM, BBC, ABC, TV5, News Asia, DW, Bloomberg, CNN, two Discovery sister channels, two yo-yo tv channels, a cartoon channel, two skin channels, and a bunch of digital radio channels that I haven’t really looked into very much. That’s the basics, they have alot more channels most of which require extra monthly payments.

Is that ABC as in the American ABC or some other A-country?

Is it just me, or does digital cable sound as cheap or cheaper than regular cable?

Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

It is cheaper; the regular cable costs $6000 a year. Wish they’d smarten up and have some kind of discount package for clients who subscribe to both!

Oh, so they’re complimentary services then. I didn’t realize that. Thanks for the info.

ABC Asia Pacific from Australia

TV5 Asia doesnt have french football thats live on TV5 Afrique which is on DSTV.

Digital Cable won’t give you any better sports channels. You’ll still be stuck with the ESPN Star Sports Chinese version which will have no live rugby football or MotoGP.
