Meanwhile, this was a rather risky move by Obama, going into Detroit and telling the automakers how to run their business. Standing up to special interest is one thing, but this may be pushing it a little for someone who presumably plans on being elected in the near future:

Actually, even Republicans have said that Bush’s plan is a empty gesture, that the lack of serious emissions controls and mileage standards that rate below EU and China belies Bush’s oil interests. So the substantive work would be lacking even with full Congressional support, it would appear.
