Taking the 236 from Chingmei to Gong Guan today, I was surprised to hear a voice proclaim in three or four languages “The next stop is…” This went on for each stop. How is it done? Surely the bus driver doesn’t have time (or the sense) to activate it everytime.
There were also English route maps posted on the inside of the bus.
The 285 line has had this service on and off for a while. It is done by GPS to detect where the bus is and announce the correct stops.
A lot of bus lines have these now. Unfortunately this doesn’t help one bit if you don’t know which bus to get on as the signs at the bus stops are still all in Chinese. At is also amusing to see how many different spellings are used for the same street name. I saw Dunhua, Tunhua, and Duenhua all on one map inside one bus.

They even have Santa Claus driving buses in Taipei now!

It has been. And the manners of the bus drivers seem to have improved.
