My camera doesn’t do interpolation/expansion so in my case it is just like cropping. And if I had a 6 megapixel image that I cropped by 50% it would look much better blown up large than when I crop my 3 megapixel images by that amount.
But most digital zooms do involve interpolation and I’ve heard that decent image editing programs do a much better job of this, so you are right that most people should avoid digital zoom.
