California ... a failed state

Just got back from a week spent around Santa Monica and Venice. Venice continues to gentrify, Abbot Kinney shops keep extending further down the street (I don’t think I saw a single vacancy there, which I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else in a long time), businesses and rich people keep on movng in and building. Yes, there’s homeless around, but it’s a hell of a location to hang if you got no place to live, so not exactly shocking. The area continues to lose some of its grit and funk, but is managing to retain it’s own character in a white bread world. I continue to think anyone who talks about Venice Beach going downhill has no idea what it was like in the not too distant past.
