A motorcycle rammed into my back bumper today as I turned into a parking lot. The girl seemed to be OK and didn’t need an ambulance. And I figured it’s OK because I have full coverage on a new car. Fortunately, she escaped without any injuries.
The police came and took some pictures and asked some questions. My insurance company even sent an investigator over to look at the damage.
The insurance guy said everything would be paid for but advised that I call an ambulance next time, regardless of how light the injury suffered by the other person. He said that because all hospitals are required to keep a record of ambulance visits, regardless of the severity of the injury, the other party has a harder time in filing a false claim for damage.
Actually it’s 110 if you want the cops to come over. My experience is that they want to be somewhere else but the law and insurance companies require the paperwork.
They said “couldn’t you just settle this among yourselves.” Lazy bastards.
The cops said it’s my fault, even though I slowed down looked in my rearview and side mirrors and had my signals on. I was halfway into the gate when she crashed from behind. Poor girl, though, she had a hard fall and the bike is basically totaled.
“Straight line makes right, a turn makes wrong,” regardless of who’s at fault says the insurance guy.

I spoke with my insurance guy yesterday before I went to court and he said the guy would probably win…but the D.A. just laughed at the case and dismissed it. Moral of the story: insurance guys know about as much about the laws here as the police (which is very little).
And there is something all people on here need to realize:
POLICE HAVE NO LEGAL SAY WHATSOEVER AS TO WHO’S AT FAULT. They are just secretaries…who document what you say…and take pictures…for SOMEONE ELSE to decide who’s at fault.
I’ve been in accidents where the other person was at fault and the police told them to pay me on the spot…which is nice of them to do…but not within their legal ability. So remember whenever a police man says who’s at fault…that’s just one man’s opinion…and since he’s a police officer in Taiwan…it’s not a very good one.
And believe it or not…the traffic rules here are about the same as back home. So let your insurance pay for her injuries if you want…but I wouldn’t put up a cent for her scooter if you feel that it wasn’t your fault…which it doesn’t sound like it was.
