Taxation has nothing to do with what passport you use.
You only get consular access based on the passport you enter on.
You have none if you enter on a Taiwan passport as you’re in your own country lol.

If I still have income sources from Canada, and I decided to activate my HHR in Taiwan, would Taiwan tax me on global income?
This is getting more complicated than I can confidently answer. Sorry about that.
Guy
To get HHR you must be here on your Taiwan nationality and yes Taiwanese are taxed on worldwide income just like other countries. In Canada you are taxed on worldwide income as a Canadian citizen.
Taiwan taxes foreigners on ARC’s in Taiwan on their world wide income. Makes no difference if you are on Taiwan or Canadian nationality living and working here you pay taxes on worlwide income. .
so it seems like it might be better if I just enter Taiwan as a Canadian and get a work permit then…
It doesn’t matter if you activate it or not.
If you’re living here for 183 days you are a tax resident and taxed on worldwide income.
Now regarding your Canadian income… there is a double tax treaty that will reduce it but likely not bring it to 0. You will still need to pay tax in both places.
That’s a good point. No matter what if I stay long-term, both countries will tax me on my global income. I’m aware that I can apply for a tax credit when I do my taxes in Canada. Not sure about Taiwan tho
Makes no difference. With no HHR you cannot be taken in for military service. Those living here on a TARC cannot do military service. Woe are us TARC holders
So do what others do here go visit the tax office. They kindly told me how I can earn up to NT$6 million and year with very little taxes. All countries have legal tax systems to minimize taxes.
So are you asking about the thread topic or taxes? There are already threads about taxes for Taiwan dual nationals.
I’m wondering if anyone holding an NWOHR was able to work in Taiwan long-term while on a foreign status (ie. Canadian with a work permit), and the pros and cons associated with it. Also not having to deal with the Taiwanese government with regards to HHR.
You cannot be here on NWOHR and have foreign work permit at same time.
You are either here as a Canadian or as a Taiwan national. You cannot be both at same time. Your nationality is the one you use to enter Taiwan.
If you enter on a Canadian passport you are not NWOHR. If you enter on NWOHR passport you are not a Canadian. Someone on a TARC does not have to apply for HHR. You can if you meet the requirement but you could live here for 20 years on a TARC.
This is what I mean. I plan to enter with my Canadian passport. So you’re saying I can be in Taiwan as a Canadian, live and work as a Canadian with ARC, despite having a Taiwan passport? Taiwan officials won’t come knocking on my door?
There’s nothing illegal about holding an ARC on your other passport even if you also hold a Taiwan passport. You’re just not legally able to apply for an APRC.
But on this way I think you don’t accumulate time towards getting your HHR unlike being on a TARC (if you require residence time in order to get your HHR).
Why would ROC officials come knocking on your door when they are the ones who issue you your ARC?
Since you are canadian, you can work as english teacher and get a work sponsorship. That´s how many native english speaker work here in Taiwan.
Most people who are native English speakers living here are not teaching English. Why do you try and limit foreigners to one profession?
You seem to have a very limited perspective of employment of foreigners in Taiwan.
Thats the easy way for many native english speakers.
