I work in a high school.
I got the job through an agency I won’t name.
After a few months I’ve come to the conclusion that the agency I work for offers me no advantage. Just additional “red tape” and a buffer between myself and anyone who can answer questions for me about why “I’m doing all these extra office hours this month without extra pay?” (for example).
They don’t provide me with materials, they don’t offer me any assistance at all come to think of it aside from giving me my arc. But I’m pretty sure hey do take around 20, 000 from me per month.
I'm fed up of it. :fume:
so here's my question? Can I ditch the agency? Is there any legal reason why I can't just switch my arc over to my school an cut out the agent? As far as I'm concerned they found me the job and have made enough money from me already.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has been in this situation?
Cheers.
Haven’t been in the situation, but here are some things to consider:
#1- The school that used the agency probably has an agreement with them where if they were to cut them out of the picture there would be reprecussions. Or perhaps the owner of the school and the owner of the agency have some sort of special relationship.
#2- At the end of your 1 year contract you could probably negotiate directly with the school. Just talk to people in the school outside the normal loop beforehand.
#3- Perhaps the agency is not taking as much as you think. How much are you earning a month? Are they paying taxes for you? What may be happening is that the agency is telling you they are withholding taxes, but not actually paying the government so that they just pocket that money and you won’t get a refund a the end of the year unless you get receipts from your school. Start demanding receipts if you’re not getting them.
OK. here is the situation and the figures.
Last year (if this counts)
A friend of mine was on contract at the school for 60 hrs a month at 60,000 per month.
My friend left after a failing to reach an agreement between the school and the agent over a pay rise (after 2 years of good service). The school finally agreed on the rise and broke their contract with the agent to reach my friends demands (By which time he’d already been offered and accepted a position at another school)
Now
My job is 60, 000 for up to 100 contact hrs per month
So instead of employing 2 full time and 1 part time teacher there are now only 2 full time teachers at the school- so myself and the other teacher are working the extra hours- for no extra pay (?)
I’m pretty goddamn sure that the going rate for a high school teacher is way more than I’m being paid.

That comes out to 600NT/hour. That’s not high, but you aren’t being ripped off, either. As long as they are keeping to that and not working you beyond the contracted hours, it sounds legitimate.
