thanks[/quote]Various services such as Yahoo! Domains offer a privacy option, where the whois information relates to a proxy company. The Yahoo! service for this costs about 10 USD a year.

thanks for the info.

do you know any companies do registration and hosting all in one?

GoDaddy.com and Doteasy.com offer both registration and hosting. I know many who have been happy with both

One very good thing about Yahoo is that you can buy your domain name right now, and they’ll put up a customizable “holder” page at that domain name until you get your full site up and running.

I think you can get your domain as part of your Office Live package at Microsoft, too

another  for GoDaddy.com from me.

There are lots of cheap hosting places out there, but many of them require US residency as your billing address. GoDaddy is global, but does restrict a bunch of countries in Asia due to fraud. Last time I looked, Taiwan was OK.

I’ve used these folks for several years. Good packages and excellent prices and service.
whois info is hidden for the asking.

I’ve been registering domains with www.namecheap.com . They give you a free 1 year subscription of Whois Guard (protecting your info) when you buy a domain. Orgs, Coms and Nets are all 8.88US/year (that includes the Whois Gaurd.)

I’ve been hosting my own stuff for the last few years, so I don’t have any hosting recommendations (well, besides me .)

I’d highly recommend spending some time searching and reading up on Hosting companies before signing with one. A couple days of research could save you weeks of heart ache (seriously.) A good place to start looking is here: webhostingtalk.com/ (search the forums.)

I know our favorite web hosts these days are HostExpress.com (New Jersey) and Hostway.com (Chicago)

Like other long time webhosts, there are packages available where you can register your domain through them. They have affiliate programs that also enable this

Best of luck

GoDaddy are horrific if you have serious needs. While I was working at Hess we were calling them about three times a week because they kept fucking up our server. Their support is terrible.

Any hosting (or plain registration) company can offer “private” domain registration. It’s just a thing that InterNIC (or whoever it is these days) have, and other companies re-sell it. You don’t necessarily need it though - the address for the domain is badly specified, and can be the owner’s home address, or a company address, or an agent’s address, or something you just made up on the spot. It has no function at all except being the place notifications are sent to if you let your domain expire and someone else tries to buy it.
