Can you use your own car for the driving test (DMV)

But you couldn’t use your US license without the international.

Of course not. But I also can also use my Taiwanese license with international in Germany…
International is just a translation limited to 2 years validity to use together with the original.

As I said, the international, not the Taiwanese only. and when I go back home for a visit, I don’t want to use a Taiwanese international to drive around Europe. I want my European license.

You are supposed to get back European license when you go back to reside there, because they are supposed to take it off of you. But it is not the first time Taiwan is not following the agreements they have with other countries. e.g. currently the double taxation agreements are also violated by Taiwan
This drivers license exchange violation is to the benefit of foreigners, so nobody will complain for it to change.

You can drive your own. I suggest it honestly, sometimes their cars are truly dog shyte. I am fairly tall and my legs were nearly at my shoulders when they did that. I literally could not drive that 1970s Japanese something. Had to rebook a date and drive my car, small Suzuki, but could press the pedals lol.

Plus you are theoretically used to driving your own car. Though, testing is to see skill so a person should be able to pass in any car if they are to be deemed safe for the road.

they ain’t the police. I did the same. It’s also why tests are done on private property. How you get there is your problem, they don’t have the rubber stamps for those issues

For other members, check your state/province laws as Taiwan claims to be reciprocal. I paid 8k ticket for no license because as it turned out, at that time, my province of Canada had a 30 day limit on taiwanese with international license. Guess what motivated me to get my taiwanese license!

Check the issuing region of your foreign license, then confirm in Taiwan. Not a cheap fine.

I got most of my home country’s licenses swapped in Taiwan. Although not easy and not cheap due to translation and notarization stuff. But in the end, I got my two that I need, heavy bike and car. Back home I have license for A, B, C, D, E. Meaning, motorcycle, car, truck, bus, with heavy trailer. But in Taiwan I only can get A and B, unless I would be employed by a trucking company or bus company, I could get them too.
Due to new European rules I need to pass a health check now to reactivate the C and D in Europe tho.

Also see thisthreads:

I had to surrender mine, too.

To be fair, in Canada they up and stole my taiwanese license. Just took it and said they will destroy it, can’t have 2. Taiwan has been much more civil to me than Canada. I always travel on Taiwan license with international now.

Were you able to get a simple replacement in Taiwan? Or did you have to go through the exchange process again?

It depends on the agreements between dmv and the issuing country.

If I exchanged my Italian licence for the tw one they would have taken that away, whilst when I converted my HK one they gave that back to me since there is no agreement on voiding licences when converting between them.

Very silly indeed

I think there is a misconception on your side about the IDP.

An International Driving Permit (IDP), often referred to as an international driving license, is a translation of a domestic driving license …
To be valid, the IDP must be accompanied by a valid driving licence issued in the applicant’s country of residence.

To use the Taiwanese drivers license overseas, you do need to have an IDP, but your original license is required. It is the actual document for your license.
IDP is a standardized translation to several languages, so the police can understand which kind of license you have, as they might not understand the language used on the actual license.

That is why I say, one uses the Taiwanese license overseas, because the need for IDP overseas is an obvious requirement that does not need to be mentioned every time.

You cannot just use your Taiwanese license. And I’m not going to use my Taiwanese license in Europe anyways, even with the translation IDP.

It was insanely easy and fast in Taiwan, as usual. They even laughed at Canadian government stealing their property.

The Canadian side truly passed me off.

Of course I can. I also used my American license in Germany (accompanied by IDP).
I was checked by police once and everything was alright.

Germany has similar rule like in Taiwan: overseas license accompanied by IDP can be used up to 6 months after arrival. Assuming both countries have an agreement on IDP use.
