Here’s a woman who is not afraid to say what she thinks. You can read about it on CNN below
“They tortured people in Iraq, they (the Iraqis) have no weapons of mass destruction. Could somebody explain to me whether you think they’re idiots or geniuses?”
I’ve just returned from hols in both Eastern and Western Canada and this kind of sentiment is definitely not prevalent, and though Methinks this woman doth protest too much, her attitude underscores a lot of Canucks’ unease at living next to such a powerful country as the US. There is a lot of respect for our neighbors, but there is also the fear that whatever happens to them will happen to us, as well as the discomfort that stems from knowing that our fates (economically, security-wise, etc.) are linked. As Trudeau once said “Living next to the U.S. is like sleeping next to an Elephant.” And I would add…You sleep lightly in case he rolls over.
Does anyone in Canada seriously “fear” the US? Do any Canadians expect to be invaded soon? Oh, if only that were true. Then, we might finally get some respect. haha
Forgive Chewycorns. This is the only issue he feels passionate about and often has to exagerrate or fabricate to get his point accross.
In case anyone missed it: Chewycorns doesn’t like Canada. Or Singapore for that matter.
But, it is always SO entertaining to read the same post repeated over and over. Chewycorns doesn’t like Canada. Once again, all together now:
zzzzzzzz :bravo:
I disagree. I’ve read a fair bit about Stalin, and I don’t think it’s a fair analogy. I think you’re exaggerating. :s
Despite not sharing his politics (I did for many years), I have tremendous respect for PET. His erudite style, breadth of intellect, and confrontational nature, made us all proud to be Canadian on the world stage. However, he also bloated the size of the Federal government, centralized more power in Ottawa, and bled Alberta dry with the National Energy Program. A mixed legacy indeed.
Regarding Canada and Stalinism. Well, Conrad Black sure thinks it is. Of course, Canada is not really Stalinist. But, considering the statist government policies and overregulation, it is not the easiest place in the world to do business. Most Canadians believe that Government is an agent of positive change in people
Speaking as an American, I have to admit that we do surveys which regularly SHOW just how stupid most of us are.
Of course this quote seems to be referring to the stupidity of our leaders, which is another matter entirely; and it refers to particular decisions rather than more-or-less unchangeable states of being (like “stupid”).
Not afraid of, (remember 1812?) but rather afraid because some assholes might deem us “like nationalities” and decide to fly a plane into the CN Tower and kill all 25 people gazing at the smog coming out of Buffalo.
And by the way, someone should tell Chewy about the differences between a communist dictatorship and an almost 200 years old parliamentary democracy and then Chewy could educate Conrad Black and then he (Chewy) should go and apply for his green card, which poor old Conrad can’t do because he would be thrown in jail for securites fraud.
I’ve never really minded anti-Americanism coming from Canadians: There are enough Canadians that scorn and even ridicule their compatriots that engage in this bizarre pastime of knowing more about America than Americans, then being automatically in contempt. Look at the following article written by a Canadian. I’m not saying I agree with everything he writes, only that, well, compare this to the anti-Americanism coming out of the Arab world.

Ah, the “love it or leave it” mentality. And I thought that sort of thinking was what so many Canadians abhor about the U.S. Your “love it or leave it” nationalism reinforces what I have always thought. Canadians are 99.5% American, they are just too stupid to realize it after years of government brainwashing.
For a moment I thought you were talking about Rumsfeld.
Oh? And when has Rumsfeld done anything similar? Or were you just talking out your ass?
